Z400 shock with 250 spring
« on: December 02, 2013, 03:39:38 pm »
Hey guys. Im new to the site. Just bought a z400 rear shock for my 92 250r. Took the spring off my stocker and I could slide the shock in and out like a straw in a cup. Completely blown. Im a really light guy at 145lbs and am assuming the z400shock will be a stiff ride. Any chance the 250 shock is the same size. If not ill be getting a 400ex spring.

The z 400 shock is too stiff at your weight.. I use the z shock on my lt but too stiff. Then i used the lt sping on the  z shock. Which  it worked pretty good. But I was to heavy for it overall. But at your weight it might work pretty good For you.

The problem is the Z spring is a 8.1 Kg where a LT is a 4.2kg  If you put a z spring on a Lt shock your over sprung unless your 200lb + and ride really aggressive on smaller jumps. Or with a lt spring on the Z shock your under sprung and valved too stiff. Either way you end up sprung and valved wrong. Unless you buy the correct or close spring rate, take it apart, rebuild & revalve a shock.
In the end a Z shock is @ 1/4 too long and will bind at full extension, It is already a couple mm less travel than a Lt shock.

The Z shock is a good QUICK fix to get back on the trail, to make it Rite, Stick with a LT Shock and get it redone or buy a new shock correctly set up already.

I agree with IceRacer 100% however (just some side info) with our 400Z we switched a 400ex spring on it for my 145 lbs wife and it works great.

springs are cheap, around 60 bucks, just get the right one

I have work dual rate fronts set up for my weight and plan on doing the same to the rear. However the lake is frozen and my tires are studded and ready to go. Won't be doing much rough riding anyway since the lake is pretty flat, I kinda wanna just get out there. I'll try it with the z400 shock and spring, then swap the 250 spring on and see which is more comfortable for now.

I use my quad for long tours on the lake in the winter, then xc and mx in the summer.

Save the trouble unless you 200 + lbs put the 250 spring on. The bottom of the shock , the fork needs to be ground out to fit the 250 linkage.

Seems like a nice upgrade. No longer like riding around on a pogo stick with wheels.
