The forgotten LT250s
« on: August 29, 2013, 10:53:22 am »
OK maybe it was best to be forgotten, but now that I have one I see a lot of members on forums that had one
or they have a friend/family member, etc that had one.

Totally restoring the one I picked up last year. Just received the extended G-Force hubs today and will get them on tonight.

Engine is hopefully going to be finished within the month. A pic of when I first got it and how it sits now.
When I got it every bearing was shot so I just decided to tear it all the way down.

Very cool, thanks for sharing. I really dig the family lines of the 4 stroke cousins to the Quadracers.
Ain't ever seen it......but I have heard it.

What year is this machine?

The one picture of the quad restored (front view) almost has a Yamaha Warrior look to it.

Is it just me or does it not look like the 250S has more potential in the front suspension than the 250R?

Wouldn't surprise me as they were more trail oriented.

It's a 1990 they only made them in 89 and 90. I have not really ridden the machine yet to see what it can do. I started it up and
made sure it ran and the gears worked and that was it.  From what I have read they top out around 50mph-ish. With the smaller
tires I am sure that will be much lower for this machine....not sure on the pressure on the tires. This is the way they were when I
bought them and haven't checked them yet. Too busy with everything else.

I'm trying to locate a DG pipe for it. I think I read they made one for it. I've seen one on a few machines, but never found a used
one for sale.  It's been fun, but my mechanic (My Brother) has been so busy this summer the engine is just sitting in his barn and
I'm dying to get this one done and ridden. I'll definitely be putting up some videos once it is running.

i had one of these as my 1rst quad with a manual clutch. i ended up building a 273cc big bore motor, the full nine yards of engine work (Y), custom built pipe and tryed 3 different camshaft combinations with it... all said and done it went 68mph on the gun ;D also would put 400exs and z400s to shame in the grass drags

do you have a lt250r also, if so i was wondering if the head light frame will fit the lt250r. they make one with a small rack on top that would be nice to strap stuff down, like a map of trails so you dont have to keep stoping and getting it out of pocket. and you can pick up a 230s or 250s for 20 bucks, instead of 75 to 100.

I really like the looks of the build he has going on there.
Think in about a year I wanna build either a 230/250s or an old 4x4 zuki.  S~
Zilla who did you use for a builder on that 273 or did ya do everything yourself?

Not much else done with the LT250s. Painted up the mudflaps for the front plastics as they were
a mess. I also added a new rear brake caliper and some G-Force hubs on the rear. Really widens
it out.

Should start digging into the engine next Sat with my brother. Hopefully all is good in there and we
can just get the new gaskets in and maybe a new timing chain while I am in there.

LT250S, I know this is an old thread, but just thought I'd chime in and say what a good looking bike you're building. Wow! My brother has an LT250s that he's going to be building eventually. There are a lot of differences between these and the 230s. A few things that are interesting. While the bottom end is similar, one big difference I noticed is that to engage reverse, the lever has to be pushed backward for reverse on the 250 versus forward on the 230. The 230E for those familiar with them, is similar to the 250s. You have to push the lever backwards for reverse.

The front end of the 250S is actually about as wide as a 250R. It doesn't sit quite as wide stock only because the stock wheels are more inset. The a-arms are actually longer than 250r a-arms if I remember correctly, but the frame isn't as wide.

The wheelbase is also longer than a 230s. I believe the swingarm is longer.

Also, the factory exhaust header pipe is a good pipe - better than a 230. But the muffler is more restrictive. A good exhaust system would be the factory 250s header pipe with a 230 muffler. (No 4 stroke sounds better than a stock 230s IMO.)

Poweroll used to make big bore kits for the 230 and 250S. Their most powerful kit was a 273cc engine with 12.5 -1 compression I think. With the 230S, you had to install a new sleeve. For the 250S, you did not have to do that, so it was much cheaper to do. They could bore the factory sleeve enough.

GrkGuy, as far as the headlight cage, the bolt pattern is the same on the steering stem for the quadracers and quadsports, at least for the 85 and 86 230S (not sure about the 250S or the laer year 230S when they had the fairing around them). The quadsport headlights are not as good. They have plastic lenses which fade, and they are not as bright as the QR headlights. They are also rigid mounted as opposed to the QR lights which "hang" from the cage via ruber mounts which protects them a little from vibrations and jarring. Also, at least the older 230 lights (85 and 86) are not the same shape. They are more square. I know a few people who have upgraded a sport with a QR light. I've never heard of anyone doing the opposite.

Hey Yagerzzz

Yes it is an older thread, but I haven't gotten that far with it as I picked up some other projects.  The motor should really be done this month....hopefully.
Thanks for the compliment.

I have the muffler off my kid's 2013 Z400 that I am going to try to use on the machine, have yet to see if I can bolt it on or what mods I need to make
as I feel the original is full of junk and I don't think I can rebuild it.  Only the really thing I didn't get new was lower a-arms as they are running $220 each
or so, but if I find a deal on some I will get them.

I have added a NOS control switch, toolbox and front light to the quad so I did do a little work on it.  :-)
