z400 issues
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:30:05 pm »
hey guys I got my buddys z400 over here helpin him fix it, it had an issue with the engine spuddering n cutting out ONLY in 5th gear, I figured out it was the gear position sensor on the side of the engine. I by passed sensor and now it runs great on top. But it also starts hard( u have to nail throttle) and kinda surges when idling, when driving at low speeds it stalls out and is vary hard to keep running, u have to constantly be reving to keep alive, but it will idle some times?? carbs getting fuel, all the grounds appear ok, I have read that these have issues with the vacuum slides? was wonderin if anyones messed with these??

That's just to clean up the handle bars not much of an issue.
Im starting to think valves need adjusted and their known for that. Makes for hard starting. I would start with that.

Tight valves. I think the z400s are known for cupping intake valves if they are not adj and checked frequently.

i would deff pull the slide out and make sure its not all scratched up and maybe hanging up in the carb. while its out, polish it up a lil bit and inspect the needle . then go after the valves.
