Quadzilla not starting

Hello, i bought a quadzilla a few months back that needed work. It ran but compression was low and you had to give it ful throttle to fire up. I had the cylinder bored with a new Weisco top end kit. I have BRAND NEW vforce 3 I installed. I cleaned the carb and it was dirty. When I put the gas on a little bit flows out of the back of the carb.. Just a few drips here and there. I poured a little gas down the cylinder and still had no luck. I have good spark. Any ideas of what is wrong or if I did anything wrong?

If gas flows out of the carb when you turn the fuel petcock open sounds like you still have some carb issues.Sounds like maybe needle and seat is worn or stuck floats.Maybe its flooded and thats why your having trouble and why pouring gas down the cylinder didn,t help.

Is the plug wet with gas after trying to start it?

Also you really have to jump on the kicker on the 500,s.Get the kicker near the top of the stroke and kick it like your pissed off.Do a search hear and pretty sure some posts for starting technique on the 500,s.

Also on a good working carb, if the needle and seat stick and the carb floods out, it should some out the over flow tubes on both sides of the carb.  It sounds like yours are plugged up.  Your carb needs a good cleaning.  If you can get some good carb dip, that might help.  Others might have better techniques for cleaning a gunked up carb.

I use a pail of carb cleaner and then put it in the small sonic cleaner I have to make the outside shine like new.

I have read about kick starting it and I kick it really damn hard. As for the overflow tubes, they are open and gas does flow through them, but its not enough to come pouring out. Is there a specific way to set floats on these zillas? I have worked on 2 stroke carbs before but not a zilla. Thanks all for the help.

Yes, the 500 can be a beast to start.... until you learn the correct starting procedure.  Remember this is a large engine, so you have to get some fuel into the engine before it will fire.  Read thru this post for the starting 'procedure'.

These are the steps that I use - ALWAYS!

1. ALWAYS WEAR BOOTS
2. Key ON AND Ignition switch OFF
3. ARE YOUR BOOTS ON?
3. Choke on
4. Gas on
5. 3-4 Primer Kicks, all the way through slow (don't have to be hard)   
5. Push kick lever down until it passes the first resistance point, DO NOT GO PAST in to the 2nd resistance point.
6. YOU DO HAVE YOUR BOOTS ON RIGHT?
7. Ignition switch ON
8. Bring lever back up to the top and give it a hard kick!

If/when the zilla kicks back on you, you WILL break bones with out a boot.  Own a zilla long enough and it will kick back on you.  I just had another zilla I was borrowing kick back on me at Glamis.  Even with my boot on, I still had a limp for about a week.  This zilla is mostly stock and it still tried to bite me!

Did all of the following and still no luck. Could the powervalve have somthing to do with this? Maybe I put it on wrong when puting it back together?

Does it kick back that hard when it does?  I haven't had a problem with kickback on my 2 zillas but there is always a first.  I usually just wear my steel toe steel shank work boots when i ride.  Now you have me worried about breaking bones!!!!

you the know the worst part about kick back is not was it does to your foot -although I've had many black and blue bottom feet -, it's when it sends your knee crashing into your thumb throttle.  That will make a grown man cry.

The PV wont prevent it from starting.  It's likely a jetting issue.  Also, if you're getting kick back, something else is wrong.  Either some arrows arent lined up on the clutch side or your stator isn't lined up correctly and is advanced a bit.  Zillas are really hard to start if the jetting is off.  And start within 3 kicks or so when it's spot on.

If you dont have one already, get a repair manual.  float height setting should be in there.

Is there a downloadable manual on this forum? What kind of jets should I run? I have an aftermarket exhuast, vforce 3 reeds, cool head, and at sea level height.

Set the floats and got the zilla running. Runs and idles great. Have a little gas coming out of the overflow tube now. Is this normal ?

No, it should not be leaking gas out of the overflow.
I would clean the carb again and re-check the float setting.
I would also do a plug chop to see how rich or lean it is running.

grab a screw driver and tap the carb while it's running.   maybe the needle is just a little stuck.  if it's doesnt stop flowing, try replacing the needle and seat or checking the float height again.

Double check and trace all your wiring to ensure good connections & clean grounds.

Glad you got it running. In the future, if the carb is clean and you have ruled that out,, then a good trick to fire them if they have been sitting a while with fuel in the carb is to yank the plug and tow it down the street in second. Oil residue builds up in the bottom and it won't matter how many times you kick they just won't go, Bring it back, wipe it down, new plug and quick shot of carb spray in the whole and the typical routine and she will fire right up.
