Just got my zilla going after 2 years!!!
« on: August 23, 2014, 07:38:18 am »
I have been lurking around here for a while now and figured I better at least put a post up and introduce myself.  My name is Nathan.   I am from Michigan, about 100 miles north of Detroit.  I have a few quads, 86 trx250r, 89 trx250r, 87 and 88 kawasaki tecate 4's, a 1997 laeger narrow protrax t-pin with a 330 in it, and a quadzilla.  Bought my zilla 2 years ago about 30 miles away from here. It ran but had no power.  Pulled the motor and sent it out to Jerry (HPR) for a total overhaul and some porting.  Finally got the motor back in and fired up.  Working on break in but wow does this thing have torque!  Never ridden a good running 500 and am looking forward to it!!  I am sure I will have many questions along the way.  Had the HPR 19 coated with a high temp clear at a shop that does ceramic coat.  I just couldn't cover up the beautiful craftsmanship of a custom built pipe!  And I don't want to be cleaning it every day either!!

Welcome to the site. Where in Michigan are you from. I'm in new Baltimore. Don't flip that bike back with that monster of a silencer!!!! You picked a great builder that's for sure!!

I am about 20 miles from Saginaw.  I am used to silencers being that long as I run FMF turbine cores on my 250r's.  I am 38 so I don't ride nearly as aggressive as I used to.....kind of paid my dues already and don't want to go there again.......

Curious to hear how that clear coat holds up on your pipe.

The people that did it do hot jet or ceramic coating.  He says it will work just fine and will last just as long. He actually puts it on exhaust manifolds to make them glossy for people that want a shiny look to them. There is no doubt in his mind that it will work fine.  But if it doesn't hold up, I will end up ceramic coating it.....But I love the looks of it this way.

Haven't been through that town in a while!! Used to park at Liberty road parking lot and ride next to the Ausable river to the dam store.  Gonna have to put that on my list of things to do this year yet.  Thanks for the offer it is nice to know a few are in Michigan and within reasonable driving distance....

Nice Zilla man -

Please post your thoughts after you get some seat time. I have had alot of quads and nothing compares to the brutal delivery of a well tuned zilla.
Ain't ever seen it......but I have heard it.

I am still working on break in so I don't know how hard she pulls in the top gears yet.  I am so used to my honda 250r's that this quad feels heavy and doesn't turn nearly as well.  Riding it around in the yard, the honda's FEEL quicker, but I need to actually race them against each other to find out as my butt dyno has lied to me in the past!!  But I really haven't pushed it hard yet, and I know my jetting is way rich for now...I will keep you posted.

Once you get the jetting right, do the camber and bumpsteer mod, then you will forget 250r's  >:D Good shocks are a plus.

I have been looking into the camber and bump steer mods.  Thats going to be next after new chain and sprockets and a EGT probe so I can use a gauge.   Good shocks will have to wait a little bit for now (as we all know, good exhaust pipes are not cheap!!)

Shocks x2.  I waited on them, then got some Elkas.  Much better handling at least in the dunes.

bike is not fast unless it can handle the power, shocks are a must if you like to run fast.
i been left in the woops before cause my bike could not handle the bumps. but i got that fixed now.

I got my camber shims installed and did the bump steer mod.  EGT probe is in finally.  Working on installing new chain and sprockets and then it is probably time to open it up and see what it can do!!!!  Is there a list of "must do" mods for an 87 somewhere?  Jerry took care of the motor so that is good but what about everything else as far as reliability?

Well, got it all broke in and running really good.  Only problem that I have is that it sure loves to boil the rear tires!!!  No sand here so i need to run holeshot copycat tires.   Pretty happy with how it runs.  But I personally don't care for the 87 ratio 4th and 5th gears.  I acquired a stock-ish 88 zilla and I like that gear spread much better than this one.  As far as the pipe, it seems to be rusting under the clear coat.   I am surprised that it is doing this.  The clear was cheap and I figured i would try it.  No big deal.  Can be blasted off and hot jet coated.  Elka had or still has a super good deal on shocks right now so I ordered a set of stage 3 shocks for it....That should make a big difference right there....

I'm up in the pacific northwest so it's wet and humid as well and I just keep my pipe oiled and seems to be doing pretty well.

What is the number on the bottom end of the 88 you have say?  My 88 still had the M107 bottom end.

Hotbutta, I am pretty careful on my exhaust temp.  I haven't seen over 1100 F during wide open throttle but all I have been riding is flat hard black dirt.  Usually shift through all 5 gears and hold it open in 5th for a little bit.  I will find out this spring on the sand dunes with paddles and good traction.  Q2W, I don't know anything about a number on the bottom end?  I haven't had the cases split so I am just assuming that it has the 88 to 90 4th and 5th gears.
