1st Zilla break in ride impression
« on: September 03, 2013, 11:01:44 am »
Finally got this 500 put together after over a year and after a few heat cycles took it for a bit of rip in the large dirt lot beside work. These things need about half an acre to turn around.lol.Carb is a bit fat on the main. Its alot different feeling than the 87 250 I have.I think being alot bigger frame makes it feel slower than it is.Completely different power with all the tourque of a motor twice the size. The more I run it the better it seems to run as its not even broken in yet.Seems this thing might shineswhen you have room to let it run?Its an 88 500,stock port, head mod,PT pipe and Keihin 39mm pwk.Maybe its the tourqey low revs but I,m not "shocked" about how this thing pulls through the lower gears that i,ve run in.Like I said haven,t really lit into it but right now liking the 250 as far as first impressions. The 87 250 resleeved to stock bore,Aaen Pipe,HPR V-2,s w/spacer,widen,d exhaust port and overall ports cleanup, head mod,38mm lectron,uni...Maybe its just the 250 is dialed in and the 500 isn,t even broken in and haven,t really had an area to let it unwind.I,ll keep ya posted and if its still not fast enough I do have a V1 Q-pipe on the way as well as a billet intake and 44mm lectron if need be.

Can the mods shrink this pic and merge it with my other thread. Not sure why the pic turned out this big and started another thread on its own.

Could be,the Keihin pwk is getting taken off first and the Lectron is going on.I,ll see how it runs then.Q pipe isn,t here yet anyway so I,ll get the Lectron on see how much of an improvement I get and it,ll give me a baseline for when I try the Q pipe.

This photo is 4000x3000 pixels.  Taking the photo at a lower resolution like 2 or 5 megapixels rather than 12 like this one would help...  Why this image didn't get thumb-nailed in the post is a good question!  <1>

Is it normal for these 500,s to vibrate the handle bars when revving them up even with the counter balancer correctly timed and new bearings/case inserts?

yes mine does that too, not always, i'm thinking maybe my axle is a little bent or play in steering , my brother's and my buddy's don't seem to vibrate as much, but my brother had his crank balanced when he had the inserts done.

Pretty sure its stock with a 42 on the back.I imagine that big single piston in there is bound to cause a bit of vibration.I,m at 529cc now.Might put the Lectron carb on tomorrow.Love the lectrons once dialed in.Best carb I,ve run on the 250 by a longshot.

Maybe someone put a 15 teeth front sprocket on it, it would affect take off for sure.

14 front but running a 42 on the rear so a hair taller than stock.Have the Lectron on it now but still the PT pipe.Seems better but I,m gonna take it down the lane for a rip through the gears tonight after work if I get a chance.I think the tourqey low revs + spinning is likely throwing my butt dyno off.lol...Might even line the 250 up with it and see what happens. :))

You'll end up short shifting the Zilla vs the 250. Let the torque pull through all the gears. The 500 has some long legs in out in the open.  That PT pipe will not rev like the big pipes. Its suppose to be a midrange pipe. I know riding my Zilla with the FMF vs. my Zilla with the Q pipe is very very very very very very different.

You were dead on 414.Shifting is way shorter on the 500 and yes it does like to continue pulling through the gears not flattening out like the 250.The bad>the lectron didn,t work out so well, pretty sure it sucked the bowl dry on long pulls just going into 5th as it would spit sputter and has to shut it down.Gonna go back to the pwk for now and see how that works.Any idea on jetting with the Q pipe V1.0?39mm Pwk.With the PT Pipe I,m at 58 pilot and 280 main which is a tad on the rich side.Q pipe will be here in the next week or 2 I think.

I have never seen a 280 Keihin main jet.

My Pwk bored to 41 at sea level I run a #6 chrome slide 185/52 and a cej needle in the middle. I'm not rich on top hitting 840-900 egt same egt on 1/4 throttle. Probably could run one size smaller main and pilot but this set up is safe for me.
