LTR250 Barn Find, Need suggestions.
« on: January 13, 2015, 10:44:50 am »
Ok, Im new here.  Im typically a Honda guy, but I have mad love and respect for all quads, especially the classics.  Last weekend I came across a 85-86 LTR250 frame with fresh powder on it in a buddy's shop.  He said, he powdercoated it for a guy and he never came back to get it.  Anyway, I found everything for the quad there in boxes.  Even wheels and tires.  Plastics in good shape. No tears in the seat. So I took it all.  $100 bucks!  Im pumped!  The only thing it needs is a crank from what it looks like.  I've thought about parting it out, and may still yet, but first I wanna see if its worth restoring cause these bikes are so cool and Ive always wanted one.  But, Im having a heck of a time finding a crank for the 85-86.  Any suggestions?  Or should I try something different like the 88-92 engine? Im very open here.  Thanks!

the later engines 87+ are better and easier to find stuff for but you would have to mod the frame for it to fit. Get a rod kit and have the crank rebuilt.

I'm parting out my 85, I won't split the case, I'm selling the whole motor. Check out the classifieds.

It down to the frame and the frame is powdercoated. Get the motor done and run it.
The 85 86 are great in the woods. Light and quick.

If you have the old crank and it needs to be rebuilt, Put an 88-92 rod on the crank and you'll have a "long rod " motor.
But...You'll hafta get a spacer plate made up for the additional length.
Cometic gasket co. can easily make that for you, They did mine for me.

Just a thought if you decide to hold to it.

If it's an 85', it definitely is worth putting back together.  The 85's rarely come up for sale.  It's always an 86' & up.  I've been keeping a close eye on QUADHUNTER.COM.  it's a web site that searches through ebay, atvtraderonline, craigslist, etc. And shows you a list of all of the quads for sale.  It's a great web site.  You can choose any make and model, then it pulls up the list, as well as a map showing you where it is located.  Do you know what I just realized??  This is an old thread lol sorry guys

This thread hasn't had a post in over a year and was started by a person with only one post.  Better revive it!  Woot woot!
