86 lt250 breaking up
« on: October 12, 2017, 02:27:44 pm »
Hi all,

Haven't been on here in years! I have been busy with other stuff and the bikes have been sitting for years.

So heres the deal. I'm a little rusty so I might have missed something in my troubleshooting.

Its an 86 that was running great, my brother let some friends borrow it for a few months and when he got it back it wouldn't open up.

So I dug into it, and found that it breaks up really bad anything over mid range. It ran perfect before and they didn't change anything.

Changed plug (B8es)
I pulled the stator and found a broke wire.
I replaced the stator, pickup and coil, set it to factory timing.
I checked the reeds and they looked fine.
170lbs of compression.
blue spark, fires up first kick every time.
took the carb out and checked it out and aside from a float adjustment everything looked ok.
air filter is new.
pipe is unobstructed, packed and sealed silencer.
I by passed all the wiring in the harness to eliminate the chances of a bad wire.
I swapped the cdi with one from my parts box.

Nothing has changed the situation. still wont rev out.

Does anyone know if a 87 cdi will work on an 86 properly? I have a running 87 that I might try the cdi from.

I know the timing mapping is a little different, but is it enough to cause a problem? How can you tell the difference between the CDI models?
I have 3 in my parts box and no idea what year they are from.

Ok, So one of the CDI in my parts box fixed the problem with it breaking up. Now I just have to get the carb jetted and it should be good. It idles lean, has a bog right off idle and isnt smoking at all.

Anyway, how can you identify a 85-86 CDI? I don't want to run the 87+ on it since the timing is different.
