I'm wanting to polish my 250 engine any suggestions on how I should do it?
If you really want to do a good job polishing aluminum you will have a minimum $400 in equipment + a lot of time and patience.
Wow well what materials will I need?
call someone that knows what they are doing, when there was a good guy around before
i think it was around 550 to 600 to have complete motor done. but it was like a freaking mirror.
you did not see any scratches or haze in his stuff.
its a lot of dirty work...
If you are looking to do a whole motor yourself and have never polished anything yourself have someone do it for you. If you want to do it yourself and learn start with your stator cover strip paint and start polishing and learn as you go.
Alright thanks I'll start with the stator cover and learn as I go
I've had no problems with using a wire wheel to strip stuff. Just has to be a super soft wheel. It helps to break it in on a scrap piece of iron.
Step 1) strip them
Step 2) sand with 200 grit
Till smooth
Step 3) wet sand with 800 grit
Step 4) cut with red rouge on buffing wheel
Step 5) polish with white rouge on different, clean wheel.
i think you guys are crazy using 200 grit, i wouldnt use less than 500
it just makes for more work, if you have a good buffing wheel you really dont need to sand covers or motor cases.
now the head and cylinder you will. the paint remover takes all that off so you dont need to sand.
I actually used the headlight polishing air tools we have and went up to finer grit pads with each step and it cuts the time in half and works pretty well. I'm going to finish the stator cover and clutch cover tomorrow.
I agree with grk once you get the paint off (i use aircraft pain remover) start polishing. I only sand if there is a gouge in the aluminum. aluminum is soft and polishes easy
I polished the whole engine swingarm, and every other aluminum part on my wifes trx250r. Like earlier stated. at least a few hundred in materials. Probably 50-60 hrs labor. Also did a cr500 a few years back. super dirty work. next time i will pay to have it done. Heres a pic of the 500, then one of my wifes trx. pics are not greatest quality, taken from old phones:
