It's been about a year since I've been on the forums asking my noob questions and still attempting to get one good running LT250r out of three Frankenbeasts I have. On vacation this week with some extra time so I figured I pick up this project again.
I've got an 88 bottom end I plan to use that had the cylinder locked tight. This looks to be the best bottom out of the three I have both cosmetically and once I started digging into it. Only problem is, when draining the oil a lot of metal flakes/shavings came out. It's really fine and I'm not sure where it's from. It's not aluminum because the magnet picks it up.
Here are a few questions regarding the metal in the bottom end:
Where could this have come from?
Is there an oil channel from the clutch side to the transmission? I'm not seeing it
Could this happen if the prior owner did no servicing/maintenance to it?
How bad is this?
My big concern is that after I get the top end on and try to fire this thing up that it's all to no avail because the bottom is no good.

This is what I'm hoping but would you think it's still from clutch wear if the metal can be picked up with a magnet?
Also, any suggestions for what to run through this before assembly to clean it? Gasonline? Mystery Oil?

The clutch has steel and fibre plates in it. The shavings could be from the steels. Have you pulled the clutch yet? Also look for wear on the drive gears on the clutch side. And yes, poor maintenance, clutch slipping could cause this. Could also just be normal wear from age. Previous owner probably never adjusted or replaced the clutch. Who knows? You find all kind of things buggered up on these old bikes.
^ Thanks for this info. I'm now inclined to think it's from clutch slipping because the gears look to be in very good shape in there. Everything is much cleaner in there than the other two. I'm running out now to grab some more oil and will start get the top end on later today. Hoping to have her up and running within the next couple days.
im steering more towards basket material or tranny gears. something isnt installed correctly. and wearing on something else. i doubt its clutch material
It's clutch,, mine does the same every now an then,,,, if i get my bike to hook up i've noticed the clutch will slip a little and since thats started happening the paste has got worse. I know for a fact all of my bottom end is together right

Paste is the perfect way to describe what I'm seeing. It's like it's a metallic grease or something. Glad to know it's just clutch. I've got another one sitting on the shelf I can throw in if this one is shot.
Just got back from grabbing some 2-stroke oil and a few other supplies and will hopefully have the motor back together tonight.
