Does this sleeve need to be replaced?
« on: February 03, 2014, 02:29:06 pm »
Can this sleeve be honed or needs to be replaced? It's a 87 head with a small chip and crack near one of the ports other than that the sleeve it is really smooth. The crack protrudes out about 3 thousands of an inch and the chip does not protrude out. Just trying to save some money. Local shop wants $300+ to do a resleeve job. I have 2 pics posted at bottom. Thanks.

Whenever I came across the bridge being broke I've resleaved. Was afraid of it making a hot spot or catching a ring. No sense in repairing with new parts and worrying of a fail or just to do it again. Not sure if there's a fix for it

So you don't think honing will smooth out the chip?

Cut the bridge out all the 86 rms dont have bridges  there basicly the same cylinder as the lt if its ben ported real big u would want to resleeve it then

u can probly chanfer the chip in the port to keep it from catching the ring most builders will recomend a resleeve

DO NOT CUT THE BRIDGE OUT. That port will break the rings and swallow a  piston on a 250 engine. It is way too big.  A RM port is oval and narrower. The bridge is there to support the rings So they won't push and catch on the ex port. And the roof is flat adding to the problem.
No, honing will not fix it. It will ruin the rings.

I am willing to buy a good running engine or buy a good top end head. I have about a $1200 budget on the engine.
