Stator or CDI
« on: September 01, 2013, 03:17:07 pm »
Anyone have a NFG stator even when it tests good with an ohm meter. Finally got the motor in the 500 and it fired right up 3rd kick.Ran rough and quit after maybe 45 seconds.Tried getting it going again and nada except 1 backfire through the exhaust...eventually check for spark and there was none.Checked all the wiring and ohm,d the stator and its well within specs.Keyway is good on the flywheel.Had a spare coil, put it on and it fires up but won,t rev up,backfires and dies.No spark but the odd time I get a very very faint spark but not consistent.I,ve had the kill switched disconnected and still none or weak spark...I,m thinking CDI or maybe the stator can be fubar,d even if it ohm,s out ok?

I,m about ready to burn this f,n thing before I even get to ride it. >:(

This is how I feel about my Zilla after spending 9 months building it and a large amount if my dads money and it won't fire or run.

Hoping someone has some input.I,m thinking stator but like I said it tests good with an ohm meter so maybe the CDI has crapped out.Quad was in pieces when I bought it some time ago and the top end toast/cylinder scored/piston.So I have no idea whether it ran before or if it had something to do with the top end going(misfire/deto,etc)......

During your build did you paint the frame?  If so did you sand it off where the motor mounts

I would also recommend double checking your ground. Does the motor have to be grounded to the frame by the motor mounts? If so I need to sand off the powder where my mount are at.

Frame and mounts are powdercoated but I do have 1 separate ground wire from the frame/coil to the engine.I,ll pull the mounts and clean them to bare metal as well as the engine where the mounts go.I,ll double check and make sure the coil to frame contact is clean. Thanks for the input B Fuss,I have my doubts but I,ll give it a shot and keep ya,ll posted. If it runs drinks on me.Likely cheaper than the gas to burn this pita.

X2 on checking for solid ground on the harness and coil. Just to make sure, if not I am guessing its a bad CDI.
Ain't ever seen it......but I have heard it.

On the old site in Rouge1970s build he thought he might have a bad Cdi. I remember him ohming out the different connections on the cdi and comparing it to a known good cdi.  I dont know if it made it over to this site.

Lol no its not me, i would not have posted it lol. I saw it on youtube, just got my bike back together, put a  Bartlett 0ringed  head on it, took care of that head gasket problem and also got top of cylinder cleaned up to make sure it wasn't warped.  Have not gone this year cause the zilla was not ready. We will be 3 bikes there  at the end  of month hopefully. We just do the drags, i'm too old for the oval, and with my luck i' break a tie rod when landing and crash.

You got a couple weekends too break your motor in, you could  come down to the drags for some friendly drag racing and you can camp all weekend for an extra $10 , they serve breakfast in the morning,  lots of 4 pokes to pick on, after drags its a free for all on track
