Double ply cardboard box, 1" styrofoam insulation and gap filler best way I have found.
Totes puncture easily, especially if the engine isnt packed tightly.
Not sure what you mean by crate.
UPS charges by weight and dimensional weight, you have to keep the package size minimal to keep costs economical.

I've never had a problem using cardboard..as long as it's packed correctly

Well I'm glad someone knew the poundage of the 500 engine..

Here's one that wasn't packed so great had me pissed off, but insurance paid off!

i built a wooden box to ship my (big) motor. put wood mounts to bolt the lower front motor mount and lower motor mounts. drilled holes on both side and ran through some rope through for handles so two people could carry it.
