87 250r oil question
« on: January 09, 2013, 04:57:24 pm »
Hey I was wondering what kind oil I should use this winter I'm running 20w 50 right now but I think its to thick for 30-45 degree weather any suggestions? Also before the bike is really warm it seems to shift down into first kinda rough and even when the clutch is all the way in it starts to roll a few feet then  will stay in place and if I'm not giving it a little throttle when putting it in first it will stall  do you think its just the clutch cable needing to be adjusted???

Could be the clutch needs to be adjusted.Try adjusting it if it is still grabby the clutch basket may be gouged. The baskets can be pretty rough on these old machines.I run trans oil in my 250,some use oil although 20w50 is pretty thick especially in cold weather.

I,d try adjusting it first but if you do take the cover off you can easily tell if its fubar,d.If where the clutch plate tangs ride in it looks like jagged teeth that are pretty deep causing the clutch to hang up its time for a new one.Take the clutch plates out and you,ll get an even better look at it.Pretty sure some guys run 10w30 or 10w40.Alot of its personal preference.Like i said I run trans oil but change it a little more frequently.

i would say that you are not letting oil heat up enough, i let my bike hit 100deg before i
put it in gear, and while its warming up keep pulling in the clutch and letting it out. that
will help get warm oil in them so you have a smooth start
life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sidays totally worn out shouting "HOLY SH*T...WHAT A RIDE!"
