86 jetting
« on: May 21, 2013, 06:13:57 pm »
Ive been trying to get my carb worked out on my 86 lt250r. I know the float is probably sticking because it just dumps fuel out of the overflow when trying to start. So I want to rebuild the carb. my question is I also want to replace the jets in it just to be safe. So what would you guys recommend for jetting? My bike is a 86 with a fmf gold series pipe with powercore silencer, it also has no airbox lid, im currently running a k&n filter but I plan on moving to a uni filter soon. As far as I know my motor is stock nothing special I don't think. So what jets would you recommend I use? genuine mikuni obviously!
                                                                       Thanks
p.s  I have read  threw several threads saying an 86 has a 34mm instead of the 85s 32mm. is there anyway to tell between the two just by looking? Cause im not even sure if I do have an 86 or an 85 lol

Before we start, what are you current jet settings? Was or is the bike currently running fine with the current jets? If not, then with no air box lid and an FMF system you will have to go rich on the jetting as the extra air from no lid and the FMF both lean the air/fuel mixture. You might even have to go with a richer needle too if the 4th clip position is not enough. The elevation only matters if you are above 5k feet. What you will have to factor is temperature. Colder temps need richer jetting and vice versa.

As far as not knowing if you have an 85 or 86 model, check the VIN for the 10th digit. 85 will be "F" and 86 will be "G."

Suggestions:
1. As you said, buy genuine Mikuni jets. I get mine from www.JetsRUs.com
2. Adjust your float arm according to the manual. This should stop it from overflowing the bowl and coming out the overflow.
