Rear skid plate
« on: May 15, 2013, 06:58:42 am »
Not looking for a stock one and I'm not looking to buy one if anyone is in the middle of a rebuild or could do without their skid plate for two weeks or less I just want one for measurements to have my own cut and welded together. I'll cover shipping to and from.

Yeah Dez I know I have a 3x12 sheet of 1/8" diamond plate aluminum and a good friend of my dads is a good aluminum welder. If I could get the demensions to cut the roughly 7 pieces of aluminum I could have one made for under $40.

Those skid plates look like you could bend them up with a brake very easily minimal welding.

1/8th inch is not going to be strong enough for a rear skid.  one hit and it'll bend up into your disc or sprocket.  most good skids are made from 1/4 aluminum

unless your running in the sand or groomed trails i'd go thicker

Thicker?

Doubled up 5/16" aluminum is 5/8" for the sprocket & brake disc

And I will be reinforcing the skid plate SBLT not just doing a single sheet cut one off of the aftermarket skid plates.

i dont have a aftermarket one laying around, i have the oe one.
let me check tho, and you will be in more trouble with 1/8 one.
first rock you hit it will be grinding against the rotor or the chain.

bigger is always better,

you better off making a tool box for your zilla out of that 1/8 stuff, then you can mount it to the rear grab bar. :)

So instead of listening to my brother I measured the diamond plate and its 1/4". Got me rethinking using it for my airbox but it should work great for a skid plate.

Buckeye--you find a skid plate yet?  I have a brand spankin new PRM measures .0261 thick,  I ran the same one for 10 years and its beat and looks like sheit but it held up and protected everything well.

If you need one to mock something up I can part with it for up to two weeks.  If you want to cover the shipping just PM me your address and I will mail it out and you can reimburse me via check or pay pal.  Say the word and its yours for 2 weeks.   I will try to attach some pictures here but i am techno picture handicaped here :)
Let me know
