Transmission rattling noise?
« on: December 13, 2015, 11:44:37 am »
hey guys, there's a rattle that sounds like it's coming from my trans on the shifter side. Sounds just like a bolt or something is rolling around in there. Is that a normal sound ya think? IDK but I don't like it. LOL Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Drain your oil and pull your clutch cover off.

Pull the head off and reseal it. Did you pressure test the coolant system?

I've had the head off four times. Lmao. I resurfaced the head, annealed the copper gasket, cleaned with scotch bright and acetone really clean,  sprayed it with copper spray, three coats and torqued head as manual specifies. The only thing I can figure is cylinder needs to be resurfaced. Gasket was stuck to head well and not cylinder so much, which leads me to believe it leaked at cylinder. I'm installing a cometic head gasket when it comes in. I got some three bond 1211 too, as someone suggested. I think the rattling could be my skid plate or nerf bars. I'm taking them off to verify before removing clutch cover, I guess. Lol. I should've rebuilt this motor myself instead of taking it to a local shop or better yet, sent it to Carl or Jerry.

I didn't pressure test the coolant system, but I will. Just wanting this to be right. I've got $6,000 into it and still running old pipe, tires and rims, plus leaks everywhere. Ha ha. I hope I don't have this much trouble with my 86 kx500 I'm rebuilding. Lol

The copper head gasket will leak unless you use a sealer like 3bond 1211 or ultra gray.

I purchased the 3 bind 1211 Q2W. Im gonna use it with the cometic gasket I ordered. I think I'm going to resurface the cylinder too. I don't want to have to pull the head after using a sealant. I love this site, couldn't figure half this stuff out without you guys input and looking at other threads. I Appreciate it.

Figured out the rattle noise. The idle gear shim and circlip was off. Circlip had some material missing too, probably beat up my clutch. I need clutch plates, basket ect.... Any suggestions? OEM?

Yep just find a good cheap OEM unless you can get a Hinson or other Billet basket for cheap.

**If you do get a Hinson they are kind of a screwy and not very stout in the way they attach to the drive gear, if not done right the drive gear will come off or he bolts will; back out and cause damage.  You can search for the suggested methods on the site here, look under "Hinson"

My son bought it for $3200. Put another 3200 into it in chassis bearings, powder, steering stem, brake lines, motor rebuild. 4 hours later motor went. I'm rebuilding it myself this time. Lol. Another $1000.00 in parts. Replacing all the bearings and seals. Bore, piston and rings, crank balanced. Sucks. Lol
