I found an old 88 frame in a shed, want to build a stripped drag/duner. Cunningham, Diablo can you guys post some chassis pics and ideas for weight removal and chassis build up. I wish LTron was here, his was beautiful too.
-
That would make for a great thread Moon, step by Step making a dragger!
-
I would say the hunk of steel below the swinger pivot is worth alot of weight, the head stay bracket and a lighter swinger. Next would be a lightweight stem, a arms, spindles. And the subframe.
-
Carrazco500 had some real cool pics of his "Pink Panther" zilla on the old forum. I've been trying to twist his arm to join up here to show some of the noobies his tricks. One of the biggest areas in zilla weight loss is in the rear of the frame. Some riders cut it off & substitute smaller diameter chromolly tubing for the basis of the frame. I took a different approach & modified a Honda 400Ex removable subframe to work with the zilla main frame. It was not too hard, but did involve an hour with the angle grinder / cut-off wheel to remove the old seat latch & various tabs / brackets. In retrospect, I would just fab a new removable sub-frame from scratch & use the Honda part as a basic pattern. One lesson I learned this past week with my bike is that it is more drag oriented & is ok for cruising the dunes, NOT 4th gear dune carving. Since you already have a very nice zilla, just ask yourself what you would change to make it more drag oriented. Marvin Shaw "Hillshooter" shocks would be a good shock because of the light weight. Stay away from the "competition" shocks as they are stiff! I'm actually gonna try to trade my comps for hillshooters. I'm running a +4" Metaltech lightweight swingarm but on hard 2nd or 3rd gear launches, the front will wheelie in a heartbeat. I may look into a +6". 8 paddle haulers on 8" diameter Blue Label Douglas rims & Mohawks up front will be your best bet. Removing the front brake system & any bumpers will take off around 10 lbs. It may seem petty, but every ounce adds up pretty quick.

got my stock frame to 275 race ready. ill show u some pics when i get a free minute.
-
diablo: i dont think your zilla is that bad of a set up for a few reason
1 you dont have much seat time on your zilla to begin with
2 you have straight cup paddles that do not steer well
3 your front shocks IMO are sized better for a 250 or standard length a arms not your long travel ones to keep you from bottoming out, ill take mine off and let you try them out
so if you have some v cup and more ride time you would be fine.

i was gonna post up some pics and such but didnt think any1 was interested in zilla dragsters. I have a detailed notebook of what every single piece on a lt5 weighs and the weight of what i replaced it with. ill tell u what moon ill make u a hell of a deal on one bad lil small reed i guarentee u wont be disapointed. ;D

Both of you start one I will open a area called Drag Builds
-
I still want it to be somewhat dunable, but light. around 300 wet. I'd rather have a Zilla than a hybrid and don't want to give up weight to one.
-
Drag bike and duneable are hard to get in one package. I wanted to do that but to much compromise made that you end up with a so so bike that is somewhat ok at this and that but not really good at that and this!!! I am going to be starting my new project (actually already started but nothing to show yet). Going to be a duner /hillshooter. My buddies 500 is more of a drag bike. Once the project starts really moving, I will start a thread for it.

the mods done to my bike would be fully dunable especially at silverlakes.

The Pink Panther is my all time favorite drag zilla.
-
pink like the color of your socks chuckie!!! lol

300 wet is easy and still be dunable
I did a quick frame lighten metal tech +8 no link with a shaw jj&a drag axle and tripple buffs was 308 with full tank still had stock a arms front shocks and stem I have pics somewhere but my brother in law was jumping mine at little sahara with no issues (I was not real happy when found out)
Still don't have it together since front drag arms shaws drag stem and a lot more frame work should be around 250-260s give or take and still be dunable since it is a dune bike
metal tech still has my front a arms and front frame stub to do zilla a arms if looking for a set of a arms mine are +3 -1 wish I would of went -2
