Title: HELP ZILLA ENGINE SPUTTERS TOP END ONLY
Post by: Duneatic1970 on May 29, 2018, 09:40:15 am
Can someone please help me with this???? When i was riding my zilla it started sputtering only at top end all the sudden. Ive checked the spark plug, carb, piston, pipe, reeds (didnt look damaged) changed the coil & cannot figure it out. Could the reeds cause this or is it an stator/electric issue??? Ive got an HPR engine package HPR19 pipe. Ive never had an issue wih this bike ever running this way & it just all the sudden started doing this. IM VERY PUZZLED!!!!!!!

have you tried a new plug???Ignition coil breaking down under load/high rpm? Also I think I remember Jerry saying he once had a flywheel that would make the bike cut out on top....Maybe the screen in the petcock is dirty???Just throwing some stuff out there.

Yea i put a new plug in it when it happened. i tore the whole top end down thinkn i stuck a piston & found nothing wrong. i put it all back together & took it out riding in the dunes last week & still the same thing sputtering on top end only. It had new fuel in it too. Im completely stumped. The plug even looks good when i check it granted its a new plug but nothing out of the ordinary with the plug. I empty the tank after every ride & drain the carb. On low & mid range its a totally normal ride with the front wheels up & tryn not to get ripped off from the power... Jerry built me an ass kickn motor package & in 4yrs this is the only problem ive ever had with it. I called & e-mailed Jerry & havnt heard back from him & i know hes super swamped so i wanted to ask here to see if anyone would have a answer & thank you for your ideas.

Many things can cause this.

Bad reeds. Bad gas. Bad spark.

Check the reeds for any damage.
Make sure it is getting enough fuel, clean carb and check jets. Also make sure petcock is flowing at 100% and floats are set to correct level.
Spark, new plug, make sure flywheel and stator are good.

You also might want to check fuel flow rate to the carb. I put inline filters on my bikes and anytime I forget to change them the same thing happens.

1.  Check the carb to see if the main jet fell out it.  Do you have a new air filter or using a different type of air filter oil.  It sounds rich or could be a weak source coil on the stator.  if the source coil is weak setting the spark plug gap to around .018" might improve things temporarily.

2.  Pull the fuel tank and check all of the wiring connections where the stator plugs into the wiring harness.  Make sure the female plugs grips the male plugs tightly  (Dirty or loose connections in this area are very common.  While you have the tank off check your stator values with an ohm meter.

3.  I have had 2 stators in the last month that had a broken wire going into the pickup on the stator.  Everything ohmed out to spec. until started moving the wires on the back side of the stator  causing the readings to fluctuate

MotorGeek- Whats your plug gap recommendation for the 500 and 250?

.

Stock ignitions on high torque engines often need around .020" spark plug gap.

Thank you Jerry & i haven't changed anything o the bike since you built it for me. It just started doing this while i was riding it & now i cant get it to stop. Ill check the stator to ensure all wiring & ohm readings are within specs. Thank you very much for the tips.
