Wow, how did I miss this thread! Good info here guys. Always looking for more light. Like mentioned above, the Baja Designs Squadron LED light is one bright mofo. This LED pulls 42 watts. I would love to run three of these, but that is a lot of coin and juice that is required.
I like the idea of re-winding the lighting coils myself to try and get additional wattage out of the 500 stator.
-
Yeah, I'm thinking rewinding the coils myself may have to be done. Well I hope to learn something.
-
There not hard to do!
I have done 2-3 of them b4 on my old bikes.
magnet wire Locally should cost $5-10 Per Lb
-
I asked about lights on the other site and some really great info was there. I'm looking to get my stator rewound by someone rather than go with the Chinese Ricky stator stuff.

For hids I read I'd need to float the ground. Run a battery of some kind. Halogens just need more watts out of the stock stator. Anyone out there able to give clues as to whats needed...
Like those on my DS !
-
Thank you Shawn, I need another one wound also.

dave at stator corp still winds stators. i saw him last year, he fixed a ktm65sx stator for me. hes done my 500 years ago, and a few kawasaki stators over the years. been doing it since i met him at dirt cycles salvage in 97, and probably doing it alot longer. never asked him about higher outputs, but i'm sure he can do it. i just wanted my stuff to work. :)
heres his phone number 508-478-5700 or 508-478-5712
he's in mendon mass. i don't have his exact addy as hes doing it out of his house now, i just know how to get there. hes about 45 min from me.

Yeah I been trying to track down Mike Goodwin "PROLITE" he was the man that wound most enduros racing Baha back in the 90s.
What is teh hot set up most folks are looking for ? Handlebar mount or frame mounted?
-
Back in the days, we used to watch stators being rewound in Ricky Stators garage.

Diego at Baja Designs was a tremendous help with my hids.

I mean at this price you can see how they work, try contacting this RMSTATOR see if they can do a 200 watt wind.

Mitch Is there any info out on the 200 watt system. Availability?
-
I found this site that is selling HID systems for A/C to D/C Ballast HID, but requires a 20 amp system (240 watt) wound stator.

the hot setup if you do a lot of night riding is a HD system
Rogue had done a LED system that I think worked pretty well with a Baja Designs & Rigid LED Cube. Went to the sand sports super show and they said that there is no big draw on start up with the LEDs like the HIDs, I am not sure on the technical specs are but Led cubes/bars might be a better way to go than Old school HIDs that require a big draw to fire.

I looked at this one and it was bright!

Rogue you care to interject on this?

Ummmm It's 2 stroke stator. Easy to rewind and upgrade, no bs charging circuit. A **** load of shops do them. Are you kidding me??? This has been hashed many times.

Unfortunately there are only 2 wattages that can be done to the LT500 standard is 130 watt, which works great using 55/100 watt bulb, right at the crack of the throttle they light up, then there is the 200 watt wind that you need to be almost at 4500 rpm for full brightness, anything below that the lights will go dim, the hot setup if you do a lot of night riding is a HD system that requires a battery system to keep the ballast (transformer) at 13.5 volts due that the ballast need a constant voltage, means still requiring rectifiers, and a wound Stator to handle the amperage load of about 16 to 20 amps, Being we run stators and not alternators you will have to charge the battery also.
I am reading more about AC/DC ballast kits (built in rectifiers and transformers), will post soon on this.
As for winding these stators let me check around, I used to sell the magnet wire they use to wind these stators to Ricky Stator and Pro Light way back in the 90’s and I am in contact with other custom transformer winders, see if we can find someone for the site.

Kennerz thanks for replying and your experience setting up your lights.
I was hoping to run something like your Zilla, and was wondering what I could make work.
