I run 15-40 gearing on my 87 .Q pipe cool head and pj 38 carb . The higher gearing still wheelies first through third and flat out moves .
-
HRD build, 13/42 stock OEM sprockets, 21" SS1 tire. I dune most of the time in 3rd. Use 4th and 5th in the higher speed areas. With the HPR#19 I can pull 4th up Olds and China Wall. Oh ya, stock swing arm. SS2 tires were too aggressive with the stock swinger. Haulers would have me on my back in the sand :D
-
nothing better then rounding a massive Glamis bowl in 5th pegged. The g's forcing the suspension to flatten out. >:D +k2
It's all about preference really. When i dune i like 3rd to be my low gear. I click 4th coming out of dune trails into to straight-aways and 5th sometimes in the open areas. I use 3rd & 4th gears the most. Although, i do think my gearing is a tad low even for that. Find myself using 5th a lot. That's why i'm switching to the 14 front. Well, one of the reasons anyway.

And I wonder why you guys are running low gearing? When I thoughy you could run higher gearing like 14/42. Is it in the motor set up no being able to pull it?
The hills are steep enough that regearing is needed to hit fifth and the two dozen whoops at the bottom to negotiate

Ten paddle uses lots of power
-
I also have a +8" stock swinger. So I think a 10 pdl extreme will work.
-
Q1.875 pipe
LMAO!! I caught that!! ;D
-
Whats your guys motor set up, tire & rider weight? I was gonna run 14/42. Dune port, alky, 10 extreme and 180#.
13/45 for now, about to put a 14 on the front. Tudor dune port, AEM filter, 8 paddle Extremes, Q1.875 pipe, m102 trans, 170#
Pulls really well in 4th and even has some pull in 5th on the str8-a-ways.
-
13/44 gearing & 10 paddle Haulers is too much for my +4 swingarm & 175 lbs going up the steep hills like Comp, Test, & Patton. But it is fun!
-
Wonder what it would cost to have new gears made? Arent they discontinued? Liberty Gear makes banshee primary gears in different ratios. Wonder what it would cost to get 4th & 5th drive and driven made?

'87 motor, '88 top end w/ 'fluff' porting, 39 pwk, stock reed, DCS pipe & silencer, 20x10-9 8 paddle scat tracs, 170#
I'm thinking 13x42 or 14x44
-
on a 250 or 500? I run 14 42 on my zilla at silver lk
-
We been talking about 4th and 5th gear ratios for over 5 years, Glamis rider reposted a section on it a few months back, aint cheap to do any more , cost over $300 just for gears, unless you can score a set good used ones.

i run the 87 bottom end and with my gearing i never even notice the 4th gear gap.
-
Be nice to find a '88-90 bottom end to run instead of splitting the cases ...
-
Mike change them 4th and 5th gears from 87 to 88
-
IMO the 13's are still to small and bind the chain.
-
I have a 14 front im planning to put on once i get a case saver for it.
-
14/47 is very common, takes alot of stress off the counter sprocket, I run 14/48
-
call sprocket specialist, they make you anyone you want. i run 13/45 and use 5th on the straight-aways in the dunes.
-
I run 13/44 @ silver lake it's just right with a 20" tire.
-
13/40 is stock -
At Silver Lake, this gearing was "ok". 4th and 5th were really fast and I needed to be on the pipe. I want to try 14/42 with my new 2.0 pipe for a little less hairy dune experience. This is with a 20" paddle tire.
It looks like the 42 tooth rear is not a common sprocket.
-
Thats cuz you were running 13/39 with 20" tires
-
What gearing is optimum for comp?
Do I want to be running so I hit fifth? Last time I couldn't hit fourth :))
But I also like to go wfo on sand hi way to the store, so I still want to scare myself...
Thoughts?
