take out that rubber piece, no oil will come out.  there should be a threaded hole there.  and the outside screw should have 2 flats for a knob.

heres some pictures of the adjustment knobs on the 500.  last pic is the 2 parts new from suzuki, knob and screw, and the part numbers.

87 shock has 2 knobs, one on the rezzie and one on the shock.  88-90 shocks have a slot for the adjuster on the shock, and a knob on the rezzie.

Edit***

I really hate not being able to edit mah post, mitch! [|]

I take that back.  They are not the same as in the pictures on part sites.  There is no where for the knob to screw into.  Just a flat head.  I bought a couple because my rezzy one was gone too.

There's that red rubber part, right where the screw should be going. Is a part missing?

Well I didn't lose mine but I was looking too. For a aluminum knob anodized blue, I was thinking of sending mine to mx tech or race tech and seeing if they could tell me what would fit?

yes you can replace those 2 parts without taking the shock apart.  there should be a little threaded piece sticking out of the shock, with a flat on it.

there is no red rubber part there on the stock shocks.  so something else is missing.  post a picture.

You can try Ronnies Mail Order. His site has the microfiche and able to order the random parts and fasteners. All parts are OEM. Hope this helps.
Title: Rear Rebound Knob Replacement Question
Post by: Dezsled on November 27, 2012, 10:05:53 pm
The rebound adjuster knob fell off my rear shock sometime ago. I took a look at the parts break down, but mine has a red rubber part where the mounting screw would go into...or so I thought. Anyone know if the knob can be replaced without going to a shock rebuilder?
