Ran the bike last weekend at Moses Lake.  Made a quick trip over to run at the drags.  They had starting lights setup but no timing equipment.  Just heads up fun running.  They didn't get started until almost 8 Saturday night.  It got dark quick and I was only able or felt comfortable to make about 4 passes.  They did have a light plant setup shinning the down track but once you got far enough from it was pitch black.  And with no headlight on the bike and a puch of crazies running around I just parked it.

But the bike ran the best it ever has I feel.  Friday the bike was running horrible.  Tinkered with it for awhile and couldn't figure it out?  Down of power and was missing and popping real bad.  I thought it could have been a fuel issue because I switched over to run the bike on VPR.  Finally traced it too find out it was only running on 3 cylinders!!!!!!!!  Plug wire wasn't seated all the way.  Then it ran fine...  Only thing I can think is that we hooked up the launched controller and probably did something.

Saturday morning we made a gearing change.  Went from a 60 to a 65 tooth.  Left the front at 13.  Readjusted the launch controller and it was ready.  Bike ran awesome on a few test passes.  Made a tire pressure change before the racing and it was dialed!!!!!!  Bike launched hard and straight.  Totally different bike now.  I love it even more!!!!!

When we hooked up the launch controller I also change the clutch from a hydralic to a cable.  Had to use a perch with a micro switch to activate the controller at launch.  Right now the bike launches at 8500 rpm and hits the top end rev limiter at 10500 rpm.  I like the positive feel of the cable better than the hydralic.  I think I am gonna back down the launch rpms a little and adjust the tire pressure.

The Rally was a blast!!!  Gord the duner 500 and got on the drag bike a bunch.  Bike ran great until later on Saturday a the hill.  Broke a weld on the shifter rolling into stage on the downward launch.  Good thing I noticed before I launched the bike!!!!!

Saw some wicked fast Raptors, Banshees, 450's and few cnversions.  Sean was there with his 1340 Zilla.  Gorgeous bike and fast as all get out!!!  Not to mentions Sean was super cool to chat with and even gave my bike few launches.  (Broken shifter so we locked it in 2nd and he let the clutch fly and ran it out in second gear.  Bike looks like a total animal with him on it out of the hole.  I need to go on a diet like the bike did.  More changes to the bike soon!!!!!!!

I will get some video up as soon as I get them.

Went this route because of the fact that the engines are pretty bulletproof.  Also with the carb set up, I didn't have to cut the back bone on the frame to clear the throttle bodies on a fuel injected setup.  Not that it is a huge deal, but for the first go around, it was easier.

For the next bike though, it will be fuel injected.  Already have the donor in the shop!!!!!

Ready to go less the new frontend.  All the parts are her just need to powder coat them (brake lever too), install, align and load it!!!!!!  Had Tim at Shaw redo the fronts.  converted to a hillshooter and an inch shorter.

New spindle mounts on the bench ready to go.  Will powder coat the wheels when I get back.

Switched from a 26" to a 30" JJ&A axle.  Will change wheels when I get back to a different offset.

Tires are tick over 25" tall and about 10 1/2'' wide sidewall to sidewall.  16 paddle Extremes with @ 83" of R.O.
Title: Re: LT 1100 Hill Shooter...
Post by: Aarona40 on May 10, 2014, 06:57:20 am
Parts are all here for the 1100.  Swapped the rear axle again!?  Went from the 26"  to the 30".  Tires swapped to a new set of 9x9.  Was able to get more R.O. of the tire.

Need to powder coat the new front end set up.  Get it bolted in and aligned.  Put the shocks on the front which have been converted from the coil to a hillshooter (rear shock is next to convert). New Spindle mounts on.  (when I get back the wheels will get podercoated black)  Should be back on all fours Monday night and in the hauler ready to head south on Wednesday!!!!!!!

Will post some pics later of it tonight as I go through reassembly.

Only thing I am waiting on is a new silencer from Shearer for the duner.  But not sure if he's gonna make the deadline!!!!  Hope so!!!  Don't need any tickets....

Just shy of 2 weeks to the Raptor Rally in Winchester Bay.  Gonna be a blast!!

The duner 500 is basically ready to go.  Just need to take care of a few small things nothing major.  Gonna burn some fuel in it and have some fun.

The 1100 is going on a diet.  Parts and pieces are arriving daily.  Just like every trip it will be at the 11th hour to have it ready to load in the hauler!!!  I was ahead of schedule by a long shot and got screwed by the guy that was going to build the Lt. weight front end and spindles.  Turn around was suppesed to be 10 days.  That was over 2 months ago!  Promises, promises....
Bad part is he has the left side a arms and my chrome stock shaved spindle!!!   DOH!!!!  Now have to work on getting those parts back from him.

So ordered a front end and it should be here end of next week.  Shocks are on the way to Shaw for some tuning.  Should have those back about the same time from the sounds of it.  Hopefully....

Was hoping to get a few other things done, but they will have to wait until after the trip.  Will get some pics up hopefully as I start putting it back together.

My favorite thing so far that I have done though is the new seat.  Lots of rework and it looks ****'n!!!  I will post up some pics of the seat soon.

Here is the 1100 as it sits right now...  Doesn't it just look sad!?

Getting back to working on the bike.  Going to be ordering a light weight front end here in the next few weeks hopefully.  Looking to narrow the front end up about 2/3 inches each side and move them forward about 2/3.  Need to play around a little with the rear wheel offset.

Might have a set of a arms and spindles up for sale soon...

Before we pulled it out of the GSXR frame we tuned and made a handful of pulls on the dyno to get it just right.  It made 127 HP at peak.  I posted the dyno sheet in the beginning of the thread.  Obviously less at the rear tire but what a hoot to RIDE!!!!!

Smoothest power I have ever ridden!!!

Put the new rear tires and wheels on the bike.   Thinking I might go to a 9" wide wheel instead of the 11".

Reworked the rear brake pedal.  Has a more positvie feel than the other one.  Few more things and it is ready for the season!!!!

I have ridden the bike on long dune rides.  To be more of a specific duner I would shorten the swing arm.  Also need to soften up the suspension a bit.  Isn't going to go through the whoops like a rocket ship that is for sure.   Really comfortable to ride and the power is so smooth!  I actually rode it on a bunch of tight and twisty tree shoots.  Did fine, but just a little shorter would have made it perfect.

That is my buddy's bike and it is a another conversion.  It has a Katana 1100 in it.  Bikes are very similar.  His was setup more as a drag bike in the video.

I will say that my favorite part about that weekend was the two of us making pass after pass on bikes that we built.  I think we made atleast 15 passes back to back right here.  Too much fun!!!

I will ook and see if I have a few pics of his bike...

I had thought about a 'Busa set up at one time.  The cost is what turned me off finally.  For the price that you pay for a engine, harness etc... you can buy a complete liter bike.  Whos know, maybe one day I will play with one.
Really liking my 1100 set up.  Seems bullet proof.  Really looking forward to the new build we are starting too!!!  It's gonna be fun to build.

I'm sure this is probably a dumb question but why do a lot of people choose the Busa engine for these drag builds? Is it just because it's a great bang for the buck or is it the most powerful engine you guys can cram into them? LOL All I know is you guys are CRAZY!

Let's just say that it is fuel injected and more of a duner...

Working alittle bit here and there on the 1100.  Starting to move the bike more towards a dragger.  Not really a track bike.  Just grudge running out on the flats.  New axle coming for the bike and going to a larger tire and more paddles. (80-84 RO and 14-16 paddles)

Bike ran extremely well again.  Loving this thing more and more each outing.  Played with the pressures in the Shaw's a little and they are getting dialed in even better.  Tim and his son Jr are great to deal with!  They were down for the weekend doing some "R&D" which worked out great for me.

Ran the bike for a bit at the flats with a bunch of other bikes and took it for a long dune ride.

Going to try a different rear tire setup next hopefully soon!!

Drag races in Monroe in a few weeks and will be running the bike there...

Did a little wrenching on the bike to take care of a few little things.  I have a feeling it will be an ongoing project!  Rerouted fuel lines a bit, moved some wiring etc...  Trying to figure out the lighting.  I am going to switch it over to a thumb throttle too.  Not sure if that will happen before Labor Day though.  Going to hook up with Tim from Marvin Shaw down there to fine tune the coil overs too.  Hopefully I will have a chance to try out my buddies 25" staggered 14 pdl extremes as well on it!!!

Can't wait to throw my leg over it again and GO!!!!!!!!  I'll be down Coos Bay/Spinreel/Boxcar Labor weekend.  Keep an eye out for us!!

Here's a few reassembly pics.  I wanted to post as it went back together but it was a mad dash to get it ready in @ 2 days and in the trailer headed south for Oregon!!!  Started the reassembly @ 7:45 am and fired the bike and rode it at @ 10:30 pm that night!!!  Next day finished the odds and ends and rolled it in the trailer mid day basically.

The thing that gave us the most issue was the slave cylinder on the hydralic clutch.  Took about 2.5 hours to get the damn thing to bleed!!!  We tried everything.  And I do mean everything!  We were just about to give up and say the bike wasn't going for the trip and then BAM!, it started building pressure finally.

Need to wire in the electrical for the tail light and provision for a head light if I want to run one at some point.

Fun build.  I want to do another one at some point...

Thank you.  It is a hoot to ride!!  Need to tweak a few little things and it should be good for a while.  Want to try a little more paddle posibbly? Or play with gearing.  Really comfortable duner.  The bike is so smooth with the power.  I can't believe it.   Love how the bike handles with the coil-overs.  Slight tweak in those and that should be good.  So glad I finally built one.  Have wanted to for years.  Well worth it!!!

Has me thinking about my other Zilla?  Debating on doing something similar with it.  Not sure.  Also toyed around with getting rid of the 500 and building a DS650 with a litre motor.  Or another TRX 250R duner.  Who knows.  But right now I love my GSXR Zilla!!!!!

Bike is finished and made it's first shakedown weekend!!!!  Went down to Winchester Bay Thursday morning and just got back.  Had a few little bugs to work out but other than that the bike performed flawlessly!!!!

Broke the shifter and rewelded it.  (need to re-powder coat, no biggie)  Had an electrical issue out in the farthest corner away from camp.  (stole wire off the bike harness to fix there and then rewired back at camp)  Somehow broke the needle off the tach???  Not sure how that happened?  The rear Shaw coil over was way to soft!!!!!  Had to have nitrogen added.  Good thing are friends from Quervo Racing were there and Daniel had his fill setup with him.  He let us borrow it to do some tweaking.  Still need a little more fine tuning but really close.

Bike is a total blast to ride.  The power is just unreal.  Any gear, any rpm it just comes alive!!!  It will rev to the moon!!!  Very different setup fomr my buddies bike.  Yet when we dragged out at the hill, they were basically dead even.  He would get the launch on me but we would stay within the same distance the whole time!!!  That was the best part of the weekend.  Racing with my buddy on two bikes that we built from the ground up.  Mine setup more like  a dunder and his more like a drag bike.  Justa ton of FUN !!!!

I have videos and will get them posted soon.  I will post more pics this week.  It is the two of us running against each other.  Also had my Zilla duner down there.  It ran well as usuall.

Little update...
Bike didn't make it to the Raptor Rally.  Ran out of time and funds.  Bike was a 90% complete roller less powder coat and wiring, plumbing.  We are planning on powder coat this comming week.  Great thing when a buddy has a powder coat operation that I can use!!!  Hopefully start assembly next weekend.  Planning on going down to Winchester bay the weekend of June 22nd for a Hill Race.

I wanted to post some pics of the bike as a roller before tear down, but the pics don't show?

Few things to order to complete the build.  Will take pics as I go through reassembly.  Can't  wait!!!!

Header length is pretty close.  We tried to build with that in mind.  Yes the tank will fit under the skins.  Yes on the muffler.  Going with the Vance and Hines off the bike.

Not sure why the pics aren't showing???

Fuel tank!!!!  Started on it yesterday.  Made some good progress.  Picked up a sheet of 20 gauge and started cutting.  At this point it is all tacked together.  Just need to cut the bottom for the tunnel to clear the spine on the frame, find a fuel neck and cap, tack the bung in for the petcock, tack on the mounting tabs and it's ready for finish welding!!!!

Forgot the pics of the foot pegs.  Here they are.  Also swapped out the spindles.  CHROME!!!! Front end looks way better now.

Starting fabbing up the aluminum parts for the oil cooler brackets.  Little more to do on that then it is completed.  Looking at switching from the banjo fittings to AN fittings.

Started thinking more about the fuel tank today as well.  I am toying with building out of sheetmetal.  Wanting to try something different and I can do it faster than the aluminum one.  Not sure though.  Running thin on time.  Need to have the bike basically done in  the next 3 weeks so I can powder coat and reassemble.....

Obviously made some good progress yesterday.  I ordered up a 1 5/8" small block header kit for the bends and pipe.   Took the Vance and Hines header and cut the collector off it.  Then started to see what I could use from it and the header kit.  We tried to keep the header tubes as close to the same length.  Header is going to a buddy's for him to tig it up.  Then bolt it back on the back, cut to length and get the collector fitted.  I am going to fit the collector close to sweep.  Then shorten the collector for the 2 1/4'' pipe to the muffler, weld on the spring hooks for the muffler and it should be off to get sand blasted and ready for power coat!!!

This will be the first of a many headers for the bike.  From what we have been told, header is key to maintain the power.  Down the road we are planning on geting some more dyno time and swap headers to find the sweet spot!!!  Having a ton of fun with the this project.  Can't wait for the next.  Thinking about another one for next year already!!!!!!

Jim,
Thanks for the comment.  I can't take all the credit.  We used Gixxerquadzilla's bike as a reference.  Wanted to stick with the Suzuki theme too.  Also didn't want to deal with fuel injection on this one.   Would be great to be able to use the stock fuel tank but it puts the engine n the cradle to low.   Want to keep as much clearence as possible for the bike.

Last weekend I finished the footpegs basically.  I will get up a pic as soon as I can.  Also did a little layout work for the oil cooler. This weekend should be building the header (if the parts ome in), work on the oil cooler and new steering stem.  Hopefully I can get all that accomplished!!!!

VERY nice build Aarona !!!!! I'm doing a very similar project on my TurboZilla hillshooter, it was set up with a 84 GPz Kawi turbo when I got it, but since then I bought a GSXR 1325 turbo set up. Just thought it would be nice to keep it all Suzuki. Your pics help figuring out the lower cradle, since the GPz and the GSXR mount up totaly different. I've got +4 a-arms, +12 swinger, Marvin coil-overs, and starting out with a 60T rear sprocket and around a 16T/17T front. And if the turbo ain't enough, the motor came with a blower setup too, although I don't think I can make that fit in the stock frame.... LOL !
Keep those pics coming !!!!!!

yes that too but you get more traction and the tire flexes well. i have tried 22 and 25's and i have had success with the 25's. maybe for a duner occasional hillshoot it wouldn matter much, but im 1 purpose

depending on its purpose, gearing, chassis setup and hp its hard to give a paddle count.. but i would stay with a 25" tire. i posted a video in the youtube section of my bike at raptor rally... i also posted pics in the photo section

My buddies bike has your old 12+ DMR swinger under it.  We have used alot of how you setup yours in his build.

That should be enough power I think for just cruising around the dunes.   What do you think of the paddle count?  Works good on the other bike.  I know that Jordan and you were talking about 81" ro at one point.

Haven't had the time with holidays to do do much.  But over the break we are going to hopefully get the motor in the frame and possibly rolling if all goes well!!!!!  Keep your fingers crossed and I will post pics as soon as the sparks start flyin'!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Had a fun night on the dyno machine!!!!!  Spent around 3 hrs tunning the carbs and running it through the paces.  After 5 seperate pulls on the machine, we ended up with some great numbers!!!!!

It made 127.73hp and 77.24 max torque at @10,000 RPM!!!!!  Really happy with how it finally turned out.  Started off pretty weak and then just kept comming on and on and on!!!!  Nels, the guy that did the running on the machine couldn't believe the numbers we saw out of the bike.  He said I should be extremely happy with them.

Now that that is out of the way,  I can pull the motor and really start moving.

One of the reasons I chose the motor was they are pretty bulletproof.

Gonna run 12 paddle rippers with @ 72-75 RO and a 60 tooth sprocket.  That should do the trick!!!

Not sure what the final weight will be.  I can weight my buddies and let you know.  Are bikes will be very similar.  His is setup for the strip though.  We are going to do a set of drag lite arms and spindle mounts for his.

After he built his, it was apparent you can't build a bike that is really good at both.  Good drag bikes don't dune well and good dune bikes don't drag well!.  There is no perfect answer to the build.  I want a nice comfortable duner/hillshooter that will hold its own with a good pecentage of the bikes when it comes time for the grudge drags out in the flats.  That's all...

Obviously giving a weight advantage to the banshee, but I think it will hold its own!!!  And I won't be nearly the amount of $$$$$ into it like some of the Banshees and Raptors out there that's for sure.

Not to mention it will still be Zilla based and look like one too!!!!!!!!!

Here is the swing arm going under the bike.  It is a +12 ladder bar setup from Proformance Prototypes.  Really light weight and set up for a 17" shaw coilover.  40mm carrier with a Lonsestar drage axle.  Setup to run Banshee brake mounts etc...

Here is the donor powerplant.  It is a '91 GSXR 1100.  Have already gone through the carbs, removed the airbox, rejetted and installed 4 Uni Filter pods on it.  Goes to the dyno this week and then we will pull it out of the frame.  Going to try and recoup some money by hopefully parting out the parts that are worth it.
Title: LT 1100 Hill Shooter...
Post by: Aarona40 on November 23, 2012, 09:00:04 am
Starting build thread on my new duner/hillshooter.  '87 Zilla chassis as the base with a '91 GSXR 1100 powerplant.  Primarily setting the bike up for dune riding and hillshooting.  At this point I am planning on running Shaw coilovers on the bike.  Also already have a Lonestar drag axle and +12 ladder bar swing arm.

I am going to have the 1100 dyno'd next week (still in the bike) to get a baseline to start with.  Multiple people have said that the header design is huge on these motors.  So once the bike is done, it will be run again in the Zilla chassis to see where the numbers are and what we have to change on the header.

The '87 frame was tweaked pretty good in the nose.  Had the frame straightened and sandblasted.  Going to start hopefully cutting and removing brackets and the lower rails this weekend.    Once the 1100 is dyno'd out of the frame and into the Zilla it goes!!!!!

I will be taking pictures along the way for the build thread here.  My time frame is the have the bike done (are they ever really done though?) by the end of April.  I want (will) to take the 1100 and my other 500 to the Raptor Rally at Winchester Bay May 17th-19th
