I didn't test ride it with just the silencer and then with the wrap. Revving the engine with just the silencer the difference was noticeable. After wrapping the pipe it was more noticeable. Not nearly the amount of pipe noise associated with 2 stroke pipes. I assume the wrap has changed the sound wave characteristics. I haven't done much with the quad since this was all done. Its mainly an ice only quad. So I'm gonna have to wait a month or two to do some real testing. Hopefully by Thanksgiving some local ponds will be frozen.

Did the header tape affect the performance or is the silencer?

Well, it's quiet, pretty much the only positive thing I can say about this. It tested at 100db, and that is with the db meter missing the large foam cover for the mic. With the foam it'll be 98db at the most. Performance wise it sucks a monkeys butt!!! Last fall when I got it, with the unmolested FMF pipe/silencer, 340 main 30 pilot it was a terror on the track. Yesterday with the 340/30 jets, wrapped pipe and '85 silencer I think I could go faster on my buddies kids badger 80. Granted it was 90 degrees outside with 80 percent humidity. I know I'll have to rejet to much lower mains cause of the gayass silencer. Couldn't get it to hit on the pipe at all, it ran pretty well kinda up to third throttle, but after that it was still way to fat. It is not the same quad it was before, for sure, not close. I don't know if its even worth messing with anymore, until winter. Last fall before the mods it ripped, but come winter and -20 to 20 degrees it was an absolute beast, man it loved the cold. I think I might just put the 40 pilot and like a 380 main jet in it, put the lowering stuffs and sway bar back on and pit it back in the barn. Wait till theres ice, hopefully early this year, put the ice tires on, bring sum tools and the jet box down to the ice and let the nitemare begin. At least I got it quiet.

maybe a thick foam filter. also cut up a 3/16 yoga mat or something and line the airbox and under the seat. glue it on with 3M spray glue for foam maybe.
- where did 7u get the awesome silencer? you could get it powder coated thick and it might drop the db a little. vibration could be a factor aswell.

Progress has been made. I wrapped the pipe with header wrap. 2" wrap with about 1" overlap, so pretty much doubled up. Stock silence from an 86/6 LT250r stuffed on the FMF midpipe(silencer cut off). Before I wrapped the main pipe is was still way too loud, mostly the pipe noise associated with aftermarket pipes. After wrapping with the header wrap it was like nite and day. Veay quiet, compared to before to say the least. I only ran it a couple seconds, the schmeg I used to seal the pipe to cylinder flange was not fully cured. I believe this set up will be quiet enough to satitsfy Mitch the **** warden. Final tunning will have to be done once it gets colder. I switched pilot jets from a 40 to a 30 for idling purposes, 85 out now compared to 0 in the winter. Header wrap is more than half the price on ebay than the local parts store by the way.

I got my '86 silencer yesterday. To my supprise it is aluminum. It is in very nice shape, not beat up at all. But bein aluminum I don't have the spool gun or gass to weld it. I'll have to make a relocation bracket to mount to the grab bar to mount the silence3r. Got it fit to the fmf mid pipe, I cut the poor silencer right off. Gonna have to get a gfood clamp tp secure the pipe/silencer connection. Just holding it up with my hand in the pick cause I didn't make the bracket yey. It is definitely a lot quitter at thje rear of the quad, but still so muck 2 stroke pipe noise, got a roll of header wrap ordered, hopefully next Friday I'll have it all done and I'll have my buddy bring his db meter over for a tes D?t.

^ That is what I'm shootin for. I could not find a stock '87 and up silencer with the mid pipe. Looks great Neckrofilliak, thanks for the pick.

i used exhaust wrapping on a old fmf with stock silencer. it was very quiet...

Strange as I run a regular FMF silencer with Aaen pipe on my 250 and its pretty quiet.I did however repack it with Aaens heavy strand packing and crammed it in there tight.Its a very heavy insulation.That said I don,t think it was that loud to begin with.Have never checked it with a DB meter and not sure how loud it is riding.
I do know it is substantially quieter idling than the Q-piped Zilla I had.

So I bought the silencer I linked to above. Got him down to 40 shipped. Looks like its in nice shape. Wont get here till next week, then I'll start cutting. After it's mounted I'll blast it and paint it flat black. Thinking about painting the fatty also to make it more stock looking. Anyone ever wrap their pipe with header wrap? That might quiet the pipe noise down some, anything that helps.

I'm pretty sure the stock silencer will not get me to 96bd. Hopefully it will be close though. It will look like its supposed to to the warden. Stock silencers didn't get my Banshee to 96db. With sume lucky throttle I got 98db. Hopefully good enough. I think I'll install a throttle stop and mark it so when he wants to test me I can quikly set it to the mark that is the quitest. I've ridden the trails all over this state and never been checked or even seen a warden. But on Okauchee and the surrounding lakes it common. They have no control over the dirtbikes, so they relly target atvs. I can rip my loud ass YZ125 right by the **** and he cant do anything.

See if you can get a hold of a cascade silencer I know they made them for the Zilla but you had to build the stinger.

I would think the stock silencer would put you in the right db level. but im not positive on that. I am in wausau wi and we ride trails often and never have been messed with. my brother in laws 330r with ct pipe is waaaaay louder than my fmf and my lrd system.
its worth a try with the stocker, and if your friend has the db meter you should be safe to check before you even take it out again.
i have never ran a spark arrestor on a 2 stroke, are they any quieter than a non arrested silencer

Silencer has fresh packing. I made the airbox. My buddy has the exact same db meter the warden has. Tests the same.

Sorry, I have no ideas, except what was mentioned about the packing in your silencer. I was curious who made your air box? It looks good from what I can see. Best of luck

This is the silencer I thinking about using. Looms like the frame mounting points to exhaust pipe inlet (where I would cut mine) looks to be simular to my FMF.

Long story short, I live on a popular southeastern Wisconsin lake, heavily patrolled by the DNR. Last winter racing around the track the warden came up to check our noise db levels. In WI it's 96db. My LT250r measured 114bd at half throttle, which it where they tast it at. Way, Way too loud the warden says. He said he'd give me 98db, but that's it. Let me go with a warning. but a ticket id $170. 5db over 96 oit doubles, with every db increase.
Im runnin a 89 250 on stock bore, no porting, Boyesen rad valve, 38mm Mikuni, K&N with a custom shield, FMF fatty, powercore silencer with a turn down clamped on. It breathes and runs very well on the ice, loves the cold air. I
put some tires on it to move it into the shop to see what I can do. I'm thinking about a stock silencer. At least it is stock, the warden knows what an aftermarket silencer looks like, unfortunately he's not dumb and I've been dealing with him for years. Looks like if I cut my powercore off where it is welded to the pipe, a stock silencer from a 85 or 86 LT250r would almost weld right in, and mount up to the stock points. I know I will have to de-tune. I did it with my 400ex and just finished de-tuning my Banshee with stock silencers. Just worried about not enough flow. Looking for some thoughts on this, positive and negative, it has to happen. Thanks, Matt.
