I don't know if this is any help, but I have a rear shock off an 88' I don't need... if you are interested.

Contact Hygear Suspension (outside of Ithaca NY). They can rebuild/revalve/setup with new spring. Had them rebuild my front works shocks to my size and riding abilities and they are phenomial.
At the time I had the front done I inquired about the rear. They said stick with the stock rear and they can rework it to make it perform well.
This winter I am rebuilding the swingarm. All new bearings, sprockets, sliders, new chain, and I'm going to have my rear shock rebuild by Hygear.

Ah, now it makes sense. The ones I got are very close to the length of shocks that came on my bike, I don't believe they are stock to this LT though, and they are VERY stiff compared to the YFZ shocks. I should just save up a little and drop the $1000 for a full set of stage 3 Elkas.

There is the R and X model, which uses longer shocks than the stock yfz. Then there is the new yfz (carbed model) that uses non piggyback shocks (junk).
I am not 100%, but i think yfz shocks are longer than stock LT250 shocks. I know the R/X shocks are longer. Issue with running longer shocks is this can cause extra stress on the ball joints and make them premature fail.

I don't think they are. I just picked up a pair and the guy I bought them from said they would fit up to an 08 yfz.
Also not meaning to hijack, but I'm trying to get these YFZ shocks on the front of my LT and I am having the hardest time grinding down the top eyelets, mainly the soft aluminum is not playing nice. someone recommended using a Sawzall, hacksaw or Chopsaw. but I don't know about that. How did you get yours to fit?

I have a 88 lt250r and I have yfz front shocks and stock rear shock. I want to either rebuild the rear shock or swap out with one from something newer or better. I am not looking to buy 1000 shocks. Any advice on which direction I should go. Was thinking about swapping to 91-92 swing arm with yfz rear. Which is better rebuilt original or newer yfz. Thanks

On my 87 I use the stock rear setup for my weight 205lbs...Also used a new racetech rear spring as the stock one was pretty soft.

If the rebuilt 250R shocks is setup up for your weight, quad and riding style, a stock 660r shocks will not be an upgrade. Now if the 660r shock is setup for you, then it would be an upgrade.

So if i got a shock off a raptor 660 would it be an upgrade over a rebuilt stock lt shock. Thanks

The extra weight would help lol. I'm about 190lbs.

i wouldn't say a stock raptor shock will be stiff. That black widow was aftermarket so it could have had a stiffer spring.

That might work for me having a bit stiffer spring im about 240... lol. I will have to see if i can find one. Thanks.

The Raptor Black Widow shock is a little stiff for a stock length swinger. You will also have to fabricate a bushing to make it mount correctly. It didn't take me long at all.

might want to try a raptor rear. Ran a black widow works for a raptor on a linkage setup. Where the piggyback is offset, like this

I was looking into this myself a while back. The Z 400 rear swap will only work with the 91-92 swing arms. I was kinda disappointed as I had a z400 rear just sitting there, that couldn't be used on my 90.

91-92 rear swingarm assembly is way different than the 88. Im sure it COULD be swapped over but it would mean serious fabrication to your frame. I'd send your existing rear out to someone repuitable for a rebuild, respring, and revalve. Call PEP, they are great with the older shocks.
