What size compression release would you recommend?
-
The 4 times I ran my zilla I started it with Circa's.... But it was just a "stock" motor. Fresh bore, rotted FMF the first time then an AAEN when I rode it the once and started it the other 2 times. I plan to have another big mill and y'all know me,,,, so this wouldn't be a bad deal at all! Or for the 350 Tri-Z mill,,,,

compression release is child's play.

Mike is a Vans man I never woulda guessed!
-
Damn Brian that's one mean motor you got....
I got the regular HPR motor not the HO version! But yeah I'm not fibbing .. Vans tech 8s :))
-
I wear my vans when I kick over the HPR motor
Are you serious? I've ruined logging boots trying to kick mine over. 0>me

Show us the combustion chamber and how much$ ?
The chamber looks just like the pic you posted earlier in the thread. $72 shipped back to me. I paid shipping to him.

Yep. We have two Zillas with identical HRD engines and can kick them over just fine. But when you get older or throw in a knee or ankle injury it could be a problem. Another time it could come in handy is when you are out in the middle of Glamis or some other large riding area and something isn't quite right and you need to kick that beast 50 times or more to get it to fire.... I know our Zillas are awesome and that never happens, but... It isn't always as easy as we might like to make it sound during our smack talk sessions. :)
-
I want one in one of my two factory heads. I'm all for making things easier and the way it's going with my Zilla build its a **** to start, hopefully I've fixed the timing/ignition problem and it fires right up bit either way on long trail rides with multiple stops if like to have one of these just so my leg wasn't dead after 12 hours if riding.

Here is a compression release installed in a cool head. Larry over on KXRiders did it. It is angled 15 degrees right and forward for clearance. I will let you know how it works out.

toydoc, lots of big bores came with decomps.
hotbutta, how much easier is it to start with this mod? A ysr with zilla motor wow, tt92's aflame!!!
The point was about issues that can come with it, and how a mfg dropped it.
They work, but it's not a install and never have a problem deal.
Also if your going to install one, less parts have less issues so no cable is good
-
It would be optimal to do a handlebar mount but just leaning over and pushing a little button is no biggie. The look on peoples faces would be funny when you start your 500 sitting down.
-
YOU CAN START IT WITH FLIP-FLOPS. This is a new config. for this project. I had a cable operated one before it worked well for starting but was big so it caused problems with the water jackets. This smaller one fits the bill.

This is the setup I have for my YSR50 with a Zilla engine swap. These engines are hell to start on two wheels.

Back in the 80's yamaha was installing them from the factory on all the big twins, 540, 570. They went through the wall just like accu pic. They would hang open / stick, cause more issues then help. In the end we made plugs to remove them and yamaha stop putting them in
-
Westex, I totally agree. I think I found the best solution....this guy named Larry installs them on kx500s and cr500s like crazy.. He is on the kxriders forum. It's $132.00, and the guys go wild about it. He welds a bung on the head and installs a decompression unit, then makes sure your head is still flat ( he can cut your head while he is at it) and media blasts it. I think that I will be sending my head to him. IF you go to the forum just read how happy everyone is. I like the accu products handlebar lever...... but he puts in through your cylinder, and to be quite honest he (the guy that deals with you) wasn't the nicest guy on the phone. He was sort of confrontational about it like he was the only option and putting it in the head is not the way to go. So I'm thinking a leak is a leak, and it seems to me the closer to the spark plug the better.
-
Skully had one installed on Roidzilla, but he had a lot of stuff going on with that bike LOL
Cool head, dual plugs, etc.
Said the compression release made it pretty easy to start.
Couldn't tell you what size would be best for your application, or where to get it installed (any number of builders could probably install it if you sent the cylinder head out).
If it was a simple bolt on mod I'd have them installed in all my quads...no reason to not make things easier on yourself.
Making it easier to kick (and therefore start) might save you a lot of walking if the engine has trouble starting (like a fouled plug or loss of compression).
It's not like you HAVE to use it every time either...

I believe he uses a maico decompression unit. He drills a .050 hole or so between water jacket into one of the ports I believe after Milling a flat surface.. The ama racers in the 500 class all had compression releases and yes I am sure there where some who could not start their bikes without it. Who would not want to save there energy for racing and riding? So you can run a little magura lever he sends you or you could run a works connection style with hot start lever...which in my opinion would be great...
-
Um... Mitch? I think you did a boo boo? xT@
Jzilla, that looks like something that will work. If you go that route, let us know how it comes out. I'm sure more will follow along.
-
No not at all, some of us are building hybrids for the wife G/F and they wont have the leg to start a LT500, so this is very good info, question on the item you are looking at, how do they install it?, do they drill through the cylinders walls? is there any vids on this install or pictures of installing it?
-
this may delay a knee replacement for me!! So a few dollars and it's money well spent.
http://www.accu-products.com/accu-products-specialties/accu-start-compression-release-kit/prod_3015.html
this guy will install it in your cylinder for 200..... I got a peice of steel dug out of my cornia last month it was 600 odd dollars, see what I mean?
I am a machinest by trade so I am sure I could install it or any other. I was just looking for Ideas, sounds like this sort of lt500 talk is unwelcome?
-
Make sure you get an appropriately sized compression release. Too small & you will not even know it is there. Too large & it will never pop back to the run position.
-
That's exactly what I tell my friends that want to ride my zilla. " If you can start it you can ride it ". And I make them start it 2 or 3 times just to make sure they didn't get lucky the first time. Nothing worse than having to walk or ride out to stalled quad just because the guy couldn't get it restarted. Been there done that.
-
As I tell my kids, if you can start it, you can ride it, Only one so far can start my LT500
-
Whats going on with your motor that you need a compression release?
-
Those are what I was talking about mitch. You can even get shiny chrome one's suzukiquadracerhq
-
you could always add an extra spark plug hole and use these
-
The head mounted harley one's can be used, but I believe you have to run a cool head because it is flat for mounting it.
-
Has anyone installed one on there 500? I see accu-products has a nice handle bar mount release. I seen plain ones that guys use on harleys, that I could also use. Anyone have any input?
