my advice is to check craigslist often. I stole mine... 100 bucks for one that's never been in the motor and not all hacked up.
most of what i see is 450-1200. And the 450ish one are usually in bad shape.

That's exactly what i was thinking about doing.
Except i was going to drill some holes to put some bolts through to hold them. The washer seems much simpler.

I cut them in 1/2 in the middle. I then cut 1/4 inch off. I then lathe a aluminum piece down to fit in the pegs to rejoin them. I leave a 1/4" washer (so to speak) on the lathed rod to prevent it from moving around.
Surely you get the drift and can make your own joining rod. Or I can make you one.

Well i know it's been awhile but my son has been on me about getting this project going again.
I got the new piston and had it bored.
I'll be putting the motor back together soon.
Think i'm going to paint instead of powder.
The guy i bought it from said that the cdi was dead but i dont think it is. The spark plug wire was mostly broken at the cdi. Only about 2 were connected and after pulling the boot off the wire i saw massive corrosion. My guess it was just a poor connection.
All the a-arm bushings need to be pressed out and replaced. They are basically welded to the arms at this point. Going to gusset the frame in a few spots based on lt80's suggestions.
Lt80, I had some ideas about modding the foot pegs so they can be taken off without pulling the motor. have you done this? how did you do it?

I've heard that polaris mini shocks are better.

Other than buying aftermarket shocks, are there any newer year shocks that perform better than the 87s?

The 2 tubes that come down in front of the motor (carb area) ~they can crack.
Where the 3 frame tubes come together on the bottom.
Neither is common but that's where to look. :)

The first overbore with a Suzuki piston is .5 over. this is what you want.
This leaves 3 more bores. You won't need a new sleeve anytime soon.
The 2003 kfx80 is a green Suzuki LT80. :D

damn that is nice! but yea, way overpriced. looks like he doesnt really want to sell it but if someone is willing to pay 2.5k, then hell yea.
I got the elaborate cooling system in the mail the other day. Thought i got a good deal. Entire thing plus fan for 60. Also got the carb rebuild kit. My plan is to order OEM gaskets once i get a materials list for all the bolts and such. Will be ordering a 50.25mm piston soon so i can go ahead and have the cylinder bored.
Just had to pay taxes to the man. So i may wait til next week when i get paid again. Having gutters, roof, and A/C maintenance done next week too.
Any other mods you guys know about that are simple; Please let me know!

My plan was to get new wheels but if the wheel flip mod adds more width, i'd rather do that. Was wanting blacked out wheels anyway.

I found that powder coating the wheels and doing the wheel flip mod with flush stems was a great and cheap mod. Added quite a bit of width.

It's in pieces. My son and I completely took it apart. Sand blasting and painting most everything. Gonna mod the foot pegs so they can be moved without pulling the motor too.
I remember it being wobbly though. Just thought the bushing and bearing were all shot.

I didn't tear into it yet, but I was gonna take key off my bike to see if it will fit.
I need to get a chain tensioner also, when you rev bike out you can hear chain slap on gaurd.
Have you checked the main motor mount bolts yet, ours bike had a wobble, well you can sit on it
and wiggle your butt and bike would move, after I cranked on frame and motor mount bolts bike felt
tight and there was not all that movement anymore. But that little bike sure does run good. It feels faster than the
DS 90 we have but the DS has more bottom end. And is in way better shape than the 80,
I really need to let jack (lt80) get his hands on it.

No advantage to the Kasea hubs unless you have or are getting 4 hole rims.
No brake problems. The brakes are on the backing plates.
It's been a while but I think the backing plates/spindles can interchange. Anyone thinking of that should research well first.
No aftermarket rear hubs that I know of.

Jack, are there any advantages to the Kasea hubs on the front? Do the brakes connect up the same way?
Also, were there ever any aftermarket aluminum rear hubs made for these bad boys?

I thought as much about the piston after i mic'd it last night. Stock bore. The motor has never been into.
I was thinking about hydo-dipping the tank either black or a carbon fiber look.

Also, my gas tank was similar to yours when I started. I buffed it with a fine sanding disk and an air grinder. That got the faded white out. Then i used finer and finer disks until the sanding marks were nearly gone. I then buffed it with a buffing wheel and got it looking nearly new again.

Good looking little 80 you've got there. I'm partial to the yellow and blue ones of '87 and '88 myself. There are a few advantages to those first two years also that some people don't realize (aside from being the best looking :) ). I have an '87 also, but I currently have '88 rear plastic on it because I liked those decals a little more.
BTW, your piston was installed correctly. The arrow should point toward the exhaust. On most engines, this is forward, but not on the LT80. DO NOT point the arrow forward or you risk damaging your cylinder!

Yea, im not excited about buying a new $180 CDI.
I was thinking about opening the CDI and reconnecting the wires. May as well if i plan to get a new one anyway, right?
Yea, the arrow on the piston was pointing to the rear.

So i picked up my son an LT80 last year for $100.
I got a killer deal on it. The quad looks great but is missing a few items and coil/CDI is dead.
Long story short, the owner sent it to a shop for repair (coil/CDI). A year later, after not getting any return phone calls, he went to pick it up and found out the builder recently went to jail. He went in and grabbed everything he could find but was unable to find the key and along with various other parts - mostly the cooling system.
after getting it home and taking it completely apart, i found the CDI is not likely dead just that the wires a broken right at the unit itself. Think i'll go ahead and get a new CDI though.
Other than the CDI, the top end had a little wear and the piston was in backwards. Gonna go ahead and bore it up to the next size.
I plan on painting, hydro-dipping, new wheels and low profile tires - the balloons that are on it make it super top heavy, etc etc. Total rebuild.
The plastics are in great shape except the gas tank which is faded really bad. Ill post pics along the way.
