When i bought my 85 lt the guy told me the motor and swing arm was rebuilt. I rode it for 2 10 minite rides before it melted down due to a bad crank seal. Even if the crank seal would have been good the carb was jetted lean enough to get t he job done and the counter balancer was off by 2 teeth so she would have shook herself to death. Also there wasn't one good bearing in the swing arm the front ones weren't even in right. I had all new bearings put in motor as well as new rod, piston, and seals. I rebuilt the swing arm and carb and new carb boot and boysen reed while my engine builder worked his magic. Its fast and fun and turns a lot of heads. I should have posted on here that i was looking for a good case before i sent mine to be welded but i been looking elsewhere for 3 months and all i have turned up that had a case saver still on it was around $400 and in need of a rebuild. It was cheaper and done right the route i took. If i need anything in the future I'll pm you.

Nice buy, i ended up giving my stock rears away once i changed to yfz rear hubs. My swinger is messed up as well, i've been on the lookout for an aftermarket of some kind but havent pulled anything up yet. I figure I'll either have one made if not do it myself. I am curious how do the 85/86 motors run? Mine never ran right, and instead of rebuilding it im putting in a 90 motor. I still have a bunch of motor parts from the old motor if you need anything.

Will do but feedback will be awhile as the engine is getting the case saver welded back on and i am waiting on same guy to weld a crack in my swing arm on the bottom not at the pinch joint. On a side note i did pick up a complete swing arm sunday for $80 it has good brake caliper on it as well as the parking brake cable and all. Axle carrier with good bearings and seals even had stock dunlops. I already tore it down it has the same crack as mine i will have them both welded and put the extra in the corner for a spare. I have no use for the tires or the parking brake assembly. Maybe i will post them in classifieds on here cheap when i get tired of looking at them.

I have heard that there is some math involved after changing to a 22" tire for your gearing. I'm not sure about the specifics but to get back to a stock feel after going 2"s taller in the rear you would need to go one tooth smaller on the front and add one tooth to the rear.
One thing to keep in mind, every 1 tooth to the front is the same as 3 teeth in the rear.
on our z400 we went one smaller on the front which shortened our overall top end speed but gave it considerable more bottom end.
a 13/40 will give you a little higher top end then stock if you were still running the 22" tires. but since you are running a smaller tire you should see an improvement in your bottom end. (me thinking aloud) ;)
I think a 13/40 set up should be a pretty decent all around set up. let us know on what you think once you get everything set up.

Stock was 12/ 42 with a 22 inch rear tire. I was running 13/44 with a 22 rear Tires i do a lot of woods riding but the trails are not tight. I liked the setup but there was room for improvement on top. Then i went to a 20 inch rear tire and lost all my 1st gear and top end. so i just bought a 13/40 setup.

I think the stock on mine before I pulled the 86 motor out was 12/42 but I'm not 100% on that.
It was ok I guess, pretty hard to tell because the motor went out before I could get it running right.
What type of riding are you going to be doing? That should play a huge role in your gearing. On our ltz400 we just dropped the front by 1 tooth and it made a world of difference.

I bought Vortex sprockets 13/40 and another did x ring chain to turn 20/11/10 cst pulse tires . I would have liked some input from other people using a 85 with the 5 speed and 20 inch tires bit this place is a ghost town lately.

Its all good nobody wants to give away their race setup secrets. I pulled the trigger and bought new sprockets and chain.

if the research is correct the stock gearing for a 85 lt250r was 12/ 42 with 5 speed Trans and 22 inch rear tires. With that setup what was the top speed? I am only concerned because when I bought quad it had 22 tires on rear with 13/44 gears and I went to 20 inch cst pulse tires now first gear is useless and lost all my topend. Corner to corner is awesome. I would like to only buy new sprockets once . Gearing calculator is useless if you don't know the ratio of each gear. My motor Is rebuilt with fmf pipe otherwise stock. I would like to see 60 to 65 top speed and have first gear back. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
