I believe that with this one.
Of course, I usually find it very difficult to do this.

Is this something new or has it always run this way?

If it is something new, I would check you pilot jet for restriction or you may have an air leak

Quick question. My carburetor is a VM-44. 660 main jet. Needle is clipped in the middle position (can't remember what needle or pilot jet). It will start up with the choke when it's cold on the 1st kick. But when you warm it up & turn the choke off, it seems to lean out. The last few rides, i've been just riding with the choke on. What do I need to change?
