Yes or you can put the 87 top end on the complete 88 lower end.

Thanks but i don't have the lower end just the trans assembly. Now is there anybody in the Pacific NW that  can port my 87 cylinder?

Can you put an 88-90 trans assembly into the 87 cases? I have an 87 motor with a locked up trans, i also have a complete 88 trans assembly. Can i split the cases and use my 88 trans ?

What are the benefits of the newer years gear ratio? I saw they are a closer ratio so does that mean?

**update**

Upon further inspection you do need to change the 4th drive gear.

Though the are the same tooth county the diameter of the gear on the 88-90 is smaller so you do need to change out both gears, the drive & the driven.

This is a great mod to do, unfortunatly Suzuki no longer has some of the gears avaliable new. Last time I ordered I got a set then after that people have been telling me there are out of stock. This could mean Discontinued or need to ship more from Japan, so just be sure to have them in hand before you split the cases just to install them. I will post an update after somone confirms avaliability.

For those of you who want to know how to make your 87 trans in to a 88-90 trans with the closer ratio 3rd & 4th.

Here is what you do:  Change the 4th driven gear to part #: 24341-43B10.  It is item 22 on the trans fiche just MAKE SURE YOU GET THE 22 TOOTH GEAR, NOT THE 21 TOOTH.

Also you do NOT need to purchase the 4th drive gear i counted mine right out of the cases and it is a 20 tooth, the exact same for all years, 87-90.

In fact a neat trick to do (thanks to Mr. Dale Fry) is to switch out the 4th driven so 3rd & 4th are close ratio and leave 5th the taller gear so you get the best of both worlds lots of torque to pull 4th gear on the hill and high top speed on the flats in 5th.
