LT250RWV is right.
if you look under the clutch basket there is a shift pawl with 5 slots in it. You want the middle of the shift shaft pawl to line up with the middle of the transmission shift pawl.
If you get down and look under the clutch basket you can see it back in there.

What ^he^ said. I replaced my shift shaft seal and just used a hooked pick tool and pushed the new one in with a flat surfaced punch tool.

Teeth on shifter shaft have to line up in the middle of the teeth on shiftimg drum. If you replace that, always check to see if it shifts before putting clutch cover on. Also when you take clutch cover off you have to watch from pushing shifting shaft out of place since clutch cover holds it in place.

I replaced to shift shaft seal and slid the shift fork out enough to pop the old seal out and put in the new one and slid the shift shaft back in, obviously I screwed something up. is there a way that meshes up with the shifting teeth? please help me out heading on a trip Tuesday night!!!! Thanks ahead of time!!! <1>
