you can send your rear shock to works for a heart transplant.  Only like $300 bucks.

I was checking out some Youtube vids of rear shock rebuilds, it doesn't look to difficult! Anyone ever accomplish this task on there own. Looks to me to be about the same skill level as replacing a clutch!

What do you think?

Z 400 wouldnt work on your quad  only 91 92 250. Either find aftermarket used or get back stocker  rebuilt.

Not to thread jack but Z400 shocks to stiff for the rear? My buddy has one on the rear of his blaster and likes it. Hes aprrox 175 pounds as am i. All my shocks are shot on my 90 and i don't want to spend a fortune on them. Any other replacement recommendations for front and rear? Just rebuild original?

I wiegh a meer 170 so it would be a little stiff for me. I didnt mind it when we had it on our 400, but my wife could hardly stay on the bike at all, so we swapped the z400 spring for a 400ex spring (direct swap) and it is was a world of change. we also ended up swaping the front pogo sticks for a pair of shocks off a trx 450r and not that z400 handles great for the wife, I would need a little wider a arms to be completely happy with it.

I weigh 215 dave, it was a little stiff but not bad. I think the 250 shock stock is a little soft.

Z400 is a waist of time  on the 91 92 to stiff..  Just rebuild the back stock shock.

Unfortunately mine is the 86, I dont believe that there are any direct swaps for it. Too bad cuz I have a spare z400 shock just laying in my garage.

What year is your bike dutch? I know on a 91-92 the z400 shock is an almost direct swap, just had to grind down a bushing i think.

if you can bounce rear end its bad too, you can tell if its on the spring only.

Compress the shock, if it comes up immediately then you've got issues.

If you push it down and it comes up slow and you can hear the oil moving then you're probably ok.

Also it will feel like a pogo stick since it has only spring and no oil dampening to assist.

Jerry Hall does rebuild (revalve, new spring, new oil, etc) the 500 shocks not sure about the 250 though.

I didn't know that, how difficult is the rebuild, any special tools required? A local guy wanted big bucks to re-do mine!

Easiest way to tell is the rebound will be very quick and not adjustable.  Since you are basically just riding on a spring with no other resistance. You can take the shock off and pull the spring off and the shock will slide in and out with no effort if it's really bad. I think rockymountainatvmc.com sells rebuild kits and oil, their prices are usually pretty good.

I know kind of a dumb question. My rear shock has never absorbed many bumps until it hits the springs end. And it has been this way since I got the bike so I can't tell if it just needs adjusted or rebuilt.

Also I was wondering how much a rebuild normally costs, and if its something that one can do themselves?

Thanks guys.
