Title: Re: Wanted '87-'90 Swingarm carrier and linkage and any mod parts
Post by: Sparky on October 08, 2013, 04:55:05 pm
We do a lot of fab work in my garage. I can justify high in machines but use what I have.
I was always told "do the best you can with what you got".

True true
We are set up out here with a nice miller TIG rig. We weld aluminum all the time. Wish iI had it at home. I have a TIG setup at home but it just uses my ac/DCl Lincoln buzzbox. Works nice on mild or stainless.

Well, yes and no. I prefer to weld aluminum with TIG. The only thing is, it needs to be AC and high frequency. I don't have the high frequency part at my house, or on the jobsite at my job. The company I work for has a nice Hi Freq welder at their shop, and if/when I get sent there, I will weld it up. Aluminum can be welded with push/pull mig spoolguns as well. Stick welding aluminum sucks. I've never seen anyone do it on parts that were critical, so I'm not gonna attempt to weld it until I got the right tools.

I appreciate the offer but I'm in a Brazil and we can't get any quantity metal that I would trust.
Can't you get that spot welded up?

Right on man! My 88 swinger is **** right on the swingarm bearing area. Probably just from having bad bearings in it for too long. I bet there is some material onboard and if you find a pipefitter and a machinist buddy, you guys might be able to build a bad to the bone swingarm in your spare time! That'd be way cool. I could draw a blueprint of my stock aluminum swingarm, and send some pics if u want.

That's funny but I know electricians are faster.
I get to sit on a ship off the coast of Brazil and hunt down parts for my quads all day and get paid. Yep pretty cool gig.

Why do you wanna change to the later set up? Just curious. I've never owned or ridden an 85-86.
The 85-86 swingers like to crack bad. Most you see are **** and not worth fixing.

10-4 brother. BTW, pipefitters are way cooler than electricians. Probably faster on quads too! Lol. +k2
I've never worked offshore tho. I bet it'd be pretty cool.

I sure appreciate the reply and offer. I was kind of looking for a complete swingarm/carrier and all to make the change over from the 85/86 style. If I can find a good swingarm by itself I may hit you up.

I have a swing arm and carrier. I could sell the carrier, but not the swingarm yet. I'm hoping my company sends me to the fab shop after the job I'm on is finished so I can weld the swingarm and press new bearings in it. Once that's done I'd sell it to a member pretty cheap. I had the carrier on fleBay for a bit, no bites. Its got new bearings in it. I made a bearing spacer so I could change axles quicker. It's got a slightly larger I.D. Than the original spacer, so I cut the original spacer off both of my axles to be able to change them from my rad carrier to the stocker and vise versa. It works good. The bad is, the lip that holds the brake arm snap ring has some chips, still holds the ring fine. Also one of the chain tensioner bolt holes had been drilled and tapped by the previous owner. It looks like about 1/2". The bearings are brand new NMD bearings double sealed. The whole inside has Lucas Mucus in it. It's in a plastic bag waiting to be needed. I'd sell the carrier to you for $45 plus shipping it would comewith the spacer and bearings in it. I've decided I'm going to buy another RAD carrier for my next build. Also I'm building a Steel or chrome alloy swingarm for my next one too. If you send me your email address, I can send pics. BTW my email is public here, you can get it at my profile page. If you got the cash tho, I'd recommend the rad carrier. It's really nice.

I am looking for an assembly to put on my 1986. I've checked eBay and talked to a couple guys on here.
I don't really want to spend the $500 on an aftermarket one and kind of like the looks of the oem ones.
Let me know what you have and a price plus shipping to MO.
Looking for a rear rotor too or any mod parts.
I know some of you all have parts lying around for this thing.
Thanks for any help.
