Well that settle it. I have an 88' motor on an 88' frame! I'm kind of a collector and like for things to be period correct, or original. Sweet deal guys thanks
-
Yeah, you guys got it right. I went up to GnR cycles today and while talking to Troy, he explained the same thing. He had a cheat sheet printed up and let me snap a pic of it for u guys. I'll get it uploaded ASAP. (I Got computer problems, mostly operator malfunction)
Basically remember QUIZO. Those are the letters never used in the VINs all quads and cars use 10th letter as year codes (with a few exceptions IE Polaris)
85=f
86=g
87=h
88=j (because I isn't used)
-
Yea those are the codes for the years but I think its the 10th number on the frame
This is correct. It's the 10th letter. All VINs i've seen start with J.
-
I didn't know that. Now I can check to see if the motor and frame match. That's sweet.
-
Yea those are the codes for the years but I think its the 10th number on the frame

It has a 6 bolt, so I knew it was after 87', but which year after it, I'm not sure. From what I read, each year they would start the serial number with the next letter in the alphabet. F=85----G=86----H=87----skips I-----J=88----K=89----L=90----M=91----N=92.
Can anybody confirm this?
-
@ all american Does your reed cage have 5 bolts or 6? If it's 5 then it's an 87 motor, if it's 6 it's an 88-92
I'm not sure about all the differences internally, but the 87 motor has a 5 bolt reed cage and a substantially larger reed cage than the 88-92 motors.
-
Your right. Mine does just have a weird serial number starting with J too. I'll call Troy up and G and R motorsports tomorrow. He's got all that info at his fingertips.
-
My 500 is a J code and its an 88.
-
Could have swore mine says the year on the frame tag just behind the left front wheel. I'm gonna go to the garage and look
-
I did a quick google search to figure out what year my quad was made. I read that a serial number starting with J109 xxxx, means it was made in 88'. Does that sound right?
