gold legs = 84
silver = 85
-
I'm a member of all the 3-wheeler forums so I've been on the hunt but if/when they came up they are typically either really bad off or REALY really nice pieces that are out if budget
-
Ah I see, well there arent usually very many 3 wheelers around here for sale/part but when they do come up they are fairly cheap so I'll deffinately keep an eye out. Could also join a tecate forum if you havent already and see if theres any good deals on parts.
Should be a pretty sweet set up though when its all said and done, even though I've never been a big 3 wheeler fan, I had an atc70 at one poin in my life so I can appericate it ;D
-
Those triple trees would work but im pretty sure those are 84 forks. I have to have 85 for the disk brake
-
something like this work?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/KAWASAKI-TECATE-ATC-FRONT-END-/380345989100?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item588e6337ec&vxp=mtr#ht_463wt_812

Gotta find a Cheapish Tecate front end and I can cut on it. Or at least triple trees,,, but all the math is done
-
Have you made any headway with this project chuck?
-
hello again!
-
Thanks guys those 3 wheelers sure were dangerous. Both of those had ram steering stabilizers
-
Dez you've had some AWESOME bikes!!
My thoughts exactly!
-
Dez you've had some AWESOME bikes!! I'm going to set the rake at the "magic" number i got from a trike builder (Jason Hall) and hope the trail is right.... lol But it should be dang close,,, close enough for what i will be doing with this bike which is mostly trail riding and playing on the sand bar/dirt road.
BIGGEST reason for going with the KXT front end was radiator mounting location.
I just gotta get the rest of the front end parts so i can get this beasty cut up!!
-
Chuckie I don't recall any fork seal problems on my 85R..the 84 kxt needed the cases under the stator epoxy coated to seal up porosity, and a new stator after awhile. Kxt had nasty head shake in the whoops compared to the R... Tecate was faster up comp tho

HOLY CRAP I GOT A BIG SURPRISE TODAY!!!!
Big piece of the puzzle in!
Just gotta get a front end now
-
Yea but I don't have the nice $$$ to get it right now :-/
-
ive already told you i have a nice ported top end in the box waiting for a new owner.
-
Lmao probably so. Damn t3 flywheels going like nukes!!! I'm getting a PVL for my 250 and I'm gunna play with it on the quad. If I like it I'll throw it on the trike. Still gotta get a top end and get a pipe made and find out what tank to use and sooooo many other things it's ridiculous. But I'm sure with other peoples help it'll get built and all. We'll see. I'm really stoked to get this one together just because to my knowledge it's not been done before. I know Eddie Sanders ran a 250 Suzuki trike in 83/84 but it was an RM conversion with a Nicholson built frame. This Suzuki will be a LOT like an 84/85 Tecate and will be just as short. It's basically gunna be a yellow Tecate. With a power valve, and a cast iron sleeve. It's gonna be interesting.
Another reason I'm going T3 is because Tecate forks are a lot cheaper than Honda forks for some reason. The most expensive thing is the damn front hub holy crap!!!!
-
U r correct Brian different animals but they both have those ballon tires up front that float real nice in the sand. ;D
Maybe the 250r blows the seals out more often is bc it can be ridden harder... [|]...jk
Either way, they are both opinions and i still think you have an awesome project going on.
-
When I used to have my old 85 T3, I could never even keep the front end down. It was a completely different animal than the 82 ATC 250R airfooler that I used to ride when I was younger.
-
After talking with several KXT and R owners I learned that the honda's forks are prone to blowing and don't feel 'right' compared to the kawi's. And Honda just copied what Ace Williams was doing to his bikes to get their stuff straight lol
As quoted from a KXT and an R owner (same guy) 'There's a reason the Kawasaki doesn't need a $1000 short track kit like the Honda'
-
I believe I've pretty much got the front end stuff figured out. I just gotta find out what the acceptable amount of trail is. I'll probably just have it at the stock Tecate measurements an all ya know? I've been talking with people who have rode both the ATC-R and the KXT and they all say the Tecate feels better all around. Except for the crappy rear shock. Lol
ive ridden all 3 of the jap 250 trikes and the IMO the r hands down is the best all around. it just does everything well compared to the other. whether you want to ride it like you stole it or recreational ride. by the time kawi brought the kxt, honda was already on their 1st update to their 2 generation race model. if you compare the 85's, honda was way ahead of the game as a complete package. i have not ridden either generation kxt in the sand but i would guess that the fat tire on the 1st gen kxt would very well in the soft stuff, assuming that from the feel of the 82 250r in the soft sand.
-
Get on him!
Said he's off next week and will try and get it cut up for me. REALLY wanting to get to working on this one. I wanna cut the front end off a bike soooooooo bad,,,,,,,
I've been thinking about a lot more custom touches I can do to it. We shall see what actually happens though P*
-
just hook up a kegorator pump and fill up that bad boy with some frosty beer and ill pedal that trike all night!
+k2
-
Get on him!
-
Dude with the triples and steering neck won't get me a shipping total together
-
B}
-
A fuel pump would probably be needed with that trike there.
-
Right up your alley, Chuckie...

-
Ok for tank options im thinking of either an 81 RM250 or 82 YZ250 tank. Since I am going with the early tecate (85) front end with the radiator on the triple trees i dont need a tank with scoops and imo, big scoops like water cooled tanks have would look kinda REALLY weird with no rads in them
-
That front end is off an 89 RM250.
-
Should be getting the neck and triple trees sometime soon. Waiting to cut the frame until after i get the parts in. To make sure the frame doesnt sag down i think i will leave the down tube in it until after i've got the front end tacked up. Then i'll get a cradle bent up and a beefier down tube fabbed in. Then i'll have to find somewhere to send the frame to get finished welded.
Two big hurdles right now are the tank and pipe. The pipe is just a matter of finding someone that can make a pipe to fit the custom frame that wont get into the front tire. The tank is a matter of finding one that flows with the seat right, isn't ridiculously hard to find/expensive and that has the inside pocket/latch/things in the front. I'll give the tanks that iceracer said a look over to see how they would fit and work.

Chuckie, I can help with that kind of stuff...I taught a physics class in HS because the teacher didn't know much of anything.
I'll have to figure out where I left my calculator though LOL
-
CHuckie-that paper looks like MATH---run away!!!!!!
LOL!!! I had to get my math teach to show me how to work out the formula and looked at me crazy when I told her I am building a trike lol
-
CHuckie-that paper looks like MATH---run away!!!!!!
-
High quality, homie!!!! Yea the yellow one came out pretty slick actually.
I forgot that the stock tank mounts are in the front of the frame!! LOL So I gotta make some tank mounting tabs and hope the trees don't smash into it.
-
I love the picture editing LOL. The yellow one doesn't look too bad.
-

Doing homework!! LOL
-
Lol kyleigh what year rm front you put on that lt? ;D
-
Been doing a lot of reading about trail and rake and everything else like that so I'm a bit more knowledged on the front end now and semi-confident in my ability to build a trike that handles at least half-assed decent even.
Got someone who's hooking me up with the neck off an 86/87 T3. Now I just need the 84/85 front end. Think I found on on the bay for $140 but no axle, no hub, no rad. So I've got more yet to get.
May even have someone that will buy the front end off the quad. So that'll help fund it some. Not much, maybe enough to cover shipping on something. But any $$ is good $$
-
Got a hook up for an 86/87 T3 neck!! YES!! On the Third I will be getting it in transit and will start making more progress on her!!
-
How about instead of welding a front clip on, you leave it without a front suspension and make a segway instead?
You can ride a wheelie, right????
-
Chuckie25 on jenkem = Crazy Ideas
SO Come On Chop her apart!
-
Hey now, it's not very often that I try and make a serious thread. Why would I expect it to stay perfectly on topic? Lol.

Hmm? D?

We are all just crazy enough that we may actually make this work. And I can NOT wait to get it done S~ >:D O0
The Tecate even uses a cantilever style rear suspension that has a really crappy rear shock too!!
-
Yeah. Don't look half bad for a few minutes of searching and exposing to radioactive isotopes... :o
-
Chuckie. I have been wanting to do this for a while just havent gotten to it. Loose the whole box on the back tube its sheet metal and not very stiff. Also the two tubes that come forward there of no value at all.
Here's the questions
What fuel tank you gona use trying for Suzuki theme? Older RM ? Or just steal a early black Tecate tank, Honda R?
Radiator style. Early Tecate easy or dual rads? Its all going to dictate how you position the triple tree and head set.
The trick lower engine setup would be to bend a single tube with the pipe loop in it andtie it into the single drop that's there now.
Just a couple Ideas I had. A possibility for fuel tank is also a early yz 250 83 -87 era if you like square and 88 ish to keep the body style.
Tank: I've got 2 spare LT tanks so I was gunna throw one of those on it. May not look the greatest but hey, I've already got it.
Radiator: Going with the first gen Tecate front end just for that reason. There's not going to be enough room on the frame to put side mount rads on it I believe
Neck/2 tubes: Thanks!! I didn't know if it was actual solid plate or what. I'll replace it with some good solid plate and remove those angled tubes
Down tube/cradle: Exactly what I was thinking. Just cut the down tube off about 3 inches down from the back bone, then the 2 bottom tubes about 2 inches before the bottom mounts, build a completely new cradle that would sleeve over those nubs and weld in so it would be extra strong. That's why I need a picture of the front of an 86 R frame because I believe it's done how I want to do this one. Or maybe my tri-z frame is the same... Hmmm... Anyway.
But yea, I can't find anyone local to me that is competent/I trust enough to do the finish welding on this. I will be able to at least tack everything in place but I don't trust my little $150 flux core machine to weld all this together to ride on lol. So I'll have to find someone to finish weld it all for me.
Also, Mr. Barlett, may be getting with you on a head for my 87, and a jug for this one. Then I can have the proper cut head for the 87 and a head for this motor as well as a jug for it.
Kyle: Thanks for using my 87 for that second picture! I be danged if it don't actually look fit together!!! Lol
-
Maybe. Maybe not... :D
OK.
IT IS MUTATING!!!!!!!!! :o

Looks good for the gen 1 .... lol. Can yo do it with a machine with plastic..... n tires.
-
How's this?

This is kinda how the frame will look. Just try and imagine a t-3 front end on it lmao I did this with Microsoft paint. I only use the best of the best for frame design B) LMFAO
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/23/apy2ytuh.jpg)
This will mostly be a play/trail bike. More than likely will turn some laps on our practice tracks (dirt oval) and maybe at an mx track if they would let me.
-
Nice. That measurement will be easier to take. Now if someone can take if off an atc250r while with some weight on it? Please! It is just a simple little measurement.http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_and_motorcycle_geometry
-
start chopping already!
-
Ok so apparently, thanks to a fella on another site, needing to know the Honda rake is unimportant because the trail is what's more important. I was planning to match the front geometry of the 86 Honda for this one but I guess that plan is changed now.
-
Hope it turns out well for ya! D?
-
I didnt want to post anything until I had parts in hand and had at least the frame cut but......
So,, I've got this 88 LT250R rolling chassis i had bought.. I've also got a nice 87+ bottom end with a fresh crank and fresh trans bearings........ but the 88 frame was cut and redone to accept the 85/86 engine. Well, i would have to cut this frame anyway to put the spare motor i got in it. And while I'm at it I figured I'll go ahead and replace the complete cradle, all new tubing from the lower mount forward and up the downtube,,, and do a Tecate-3 front clip while I'm at it.
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l536/Cj15941/photo_zps23f6a9b2.jpg) (http://s1122.photobucket.com/user/Cj15941/media/photo_zps23f6a9b2.jpg.html)
My plan is to have the 86 ATC250R rake angle with an 85 Tecate-3 front end because theres not enough room on the frame to mount side saddle style radiators.
.
So thats it. I let the secret out. A few people already know about it and may mess with me for telling already (lol).
I cant wait to get this thing built. I literally have everything for the Suzuki half of this build except for a top end. I already need to get one for my 87 so i will buy 2 when i can.
Alright, lets all hope this goes well!!
