one more thing you could check is the pickup gap on the stator also

Zilla's are a PITA to start when the jetting is off.

I dont think the 87 carb is causing him starting issues. There might be something more going on.

What do you mean it wont start reliably?

In stock form, the 87 carb has a lot to be desired. But you can send it off to HPR to get fixed to better than new.

So I Have a stock '87 500 with a fresh top end. I Cleaned the carb out and it fired up.
But now I can't get it to start reliably. While searching for the stock specs, it seems the '87 carb is just an unreliable POS. True? Should I get an 88+ or a PVK?
