i cut my head mount off my frame as well. I left the plate the is welded to the frame, just cut the ears off the frame.
-
I dont run one but i also tore apart a good motor to replace the thrust washers after i rode it a half hour.. Call me... Paranoid or cautious.
-
I completely cut off the mount on my frame so i guess even if i did want to run one i cant. im thinking about cutting the tab off my coolhead for looks.
-
I don't like running anything but the swingarm bolt on the engine.
That way I can do an engine wheelie every time I give it throttle.
-
Thanks Jerry I plan on having the ears reinforced this off season or next. And if they crack and I melt a piston that gives me reason to do it sooner lol.
-
To each his own, I haven't ran 1 in 14 years.
-
So Jerry if I have an o ringed head but didn't get my ears reinforced should I not use the head stay mount?
I would recommend that the ears be PROPERLY reinforced on all cylinders that have been ported. If it has a fresh bore, you should reinforce the ears before it needs bored the next time.
I have seen a hand full of stock cylinders with a lot of miles on them crack the ears. I have also had many customers who would not spend the money to reinforce the ears or they had someone not properly reinforce the ears, break on the first outing after we put some power into the engine.
It might be a good idea not to use the head stay until your ears are modified.

i've always ran the upper mount, never had a blown head gasket in all the 15 years i've owned it. but its mostly stock, just bolt on's. my buddies 87 never blew a gasket either.
-
I dont run mine. I prob would tho on a play/duner
-
Jerry do you recommend running the head stay on your lt500 top ends?

Super noob here.....I just read that it is recommended not to use the motor mount that bolts to the head. Can someone explain the reasoning please?
This was recommended by those engine builders that were still in the dark age and attempting to make a copper head gasket seal. They also thought that running the head stay contributed to cracking their improperly reinforced ears on the back of the LT 500 cylinders.
