First off welcome to the club. You will find that a 2stroke is a finicky beast but when tamed properly (ie maintained/jetted/etc) it will prove to be one awesome ride. A few pictures in the thread here will help us help you in seeing how the bike is set up.
Your best bet is to start with the service manual if you have it or buy a Clymer repair manual. It will give you the best baseline understanding of your bike and the standard maintenance and repair. It also gives you a guide of what to check before and after each riding session and what to keep an eye on during your ride.

I buy regular wet clutch motorcycle oil. Usually the cheapest stuff they have,no additives and change it every ride or at least every other ride. Especially if you ride hard and use the clutch a lot. If you get in that habit, you'l notice if your losing oil and not ruin your transmission and it keeps you bottom end clean.
900ml of oil in the transmission. Which a quart of oil has 1000ml.
That's like buying 9 oil changes and getting the 10th free.

Yes i plan on mixing 32:1 with amsoil 2 stroke oil. It also has a K&N air filter and fmf silencer on what looks like to be the stock pipe, if that makes a difference on the jetting. Also if I take the two blots out of the the silencer that bolts it to the frame my pipe will slip right off the motor if that explains it better.

You do know you need to mix 2 stroke oil with the gas? Just checking....
The exhaust should have a coupler that seals the chamber to the silencer. The transmission oil should be filled to the quantity listed on the case. To check level there is a bolt that can be removed to see if oil is filled high enough. I suggest downloading a service manual and giving it a good study.

Ok guys I just bought a 87 lt250r it is pretty much stock, expect boyseen reeds and fmf silencer. It was just rebuilt by the guy I got it off off. I am new to the lt250r and 2 stokes in general. I plan on running amsoil 10w40 oil in it. Is that a good weight. Is there only one place to pour oil into? And is there an way to tell if the oil level is good? Also the pipe thats on it just slips on to the motor and is held on by a spring and the 2 bolts that attaches to the silencer. Is this normal? Another Question I have is what size jet should I use? There is a 38 mm keihin carb on it and it has a .168 jet in it now. he said i should go down a few sized but it seems to be running fine to me. I am mostly wondering about what I should do to maintain this quad. How often to change oil? What should I check before I go for a weekend of riding? Thanks for any input.
