Dale, We have spoke before on the phone and you told me the reason behind using a car dyno to load the Atv. If my memory serves me correct it was because you said it was the best real world load of running up the hill for a good 8-9 second pull. Your bike was set up to a t to run Q. Congrats on that. But answer if you like or maybe Jerry can. If your bike makes say 70-80hp on gas moving a 3500# roller why did it only run mid 50 mph up the hill. And why didn't you run anymore the rest of the time? Just seems weird to drive for hours to make one pass and than drive hours back home.
For clarification on the banshee. I called mat to confirm what it was. Its Toms 100% 425+ # pump gas duner banshee. Not a bad duner either.
And whats all the talk about this other "stock" JH hall bike that was racing when in fact its a 3 mil spacer plate big bore "stock" motor.
Chris, I'm not sure this covers what your questioning here but...Yes I prefer to tune on the car dyno, I like the heavy load and longer time duration because I feel it equates more to the riding I do. Your in the ballpark on HP #s and roller weight...as far as speed..thats the best I could do with that setup I guess , I didnt know that was the goal..did you do somekind of math and think speed should be more??
I have run that exact setup for 3 years (except for rear suspension) and have rode it beside many of the guys on here at Glamis. I ride it for hrs through the dunes.. It runs consistent 56-58 mph passes on Olds.
The bridge broke out of the intake last season,.. trashed things up pretty good, we cleaned it up and I'm running it with no bridge (didn't want to sleeve it yet, only 88 bore) which will certainly shorten piston life. In the process I lost about 3 hp someplace..between new head and cleaning up port gouges. It still runs pretty good as you saw.
After the race I sat down to drink a water and my son hopped on the same bike and made 8-10 passes with all the other guys on the hill. He doesn't ride often but had a great time in the mix. I think he won a few lost a few...My hybrid didn't get much time at all in that afternoon and I wish I would have run it more,..Its actually faster than the small reed bike but is very light and quite a wild handful coming out of the hole..only +4 swingarm, and even with just 8 paddle haulers. Big reed, Long Rod, and a little KX piston... way different power curve.
I have a much faster bike but the word was duner bike racing only,.. gas,.. 57" wheelbase type bikes per RK. I had planned to bring it to show off but couldn't get a last minute ignition issue to straighten out when we gave it a spin on the big rollers...... I was out of time.
The black LT belongs to a young friend of mine Aaron... He is adding performance as his wallet allows. He bought the motor from a friend.. its got a 2 mil stroke, long rod, and runs a Lt piston which is tall so needs a big spacer under the cyl, he just added the 44 carb that trip,..I loaned him a HPR 19 pipe off my other duner. His next step is porting and he will have a good runner. It has great lowend as everyone saw.. runs out of breath about 6500 rpm,.. but still he beat most of the bikes there (LT's)
I told RK and the others there I'll be in Glamis this coming weekend if anyone wants to come out and ride/race. Going out Fri night, going to camp on the flats. Company Welcome..! I'll have the same bikes.

We chose to go to the moon not because it was easy, but because it was hard.
I employ the same philosophy to building my zilla. Ya, sometimes I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle but every season it gets alittle quicker & alittle faster. I could easily build a cookie cutter popular bike & be fast like everyone else, but where is the pride in that?

I'm not on anybodies side. I dont care about Q or JH. Not gonna sell the zilla. Not yet anyway. I just wanted to know about the zillas.

It would stand to reason that they're making considerably more acceleration towards the end of the race in order to make up for the slower start.
Double the length of the race and the one with the faster speed should win every time, yes?

Some builds will get the higher mph, but do not have a steady rate of acceleration. Take the banshee, its no secret they have low torque, but they do scream up top. Slower rate of acceleration, but will rev out further. Slower ET, higher MPH.

The whole "faster mph but higher ET" thing has always confused me.
Is it because they're not getting the traction they need at slow speeds?

I agree with mitch a dyno is definately a good tool in testing and tuning. And buckeye I agree with you too they should meet at the bike rack after school

Well all I learned from all of this is the use of a dyno does help when building and tuning engines for real world racing or even just for plain play riding.

Kennerz I do see what goes into making a fast 500 motor and zelda and all bikes involved are damn sweet bikes yours included !!! I know what you mean about riding the dunes for hrs after also I had a drag sled and after 300 feet 2 runs I needed to let it cool down or I was done for the season. I respect both parties involved and all the top notch builders. I just thought the weeks before there was alot of bickering about whos better and maybe you were just defending Q cause there are a few Q haters here I saw all that too. me.... I have no hate I have a Q pipe on 2 of my bikes and love them. Glad everyone had fun and could get along cause the weeks before it didnt seem it would turn out that way.

Come out and ride. Last weekend we went to glamis. The Osborne area was very nice, nothing quite like flying around a big bowl clicking off 5 th gear. I felt like I was on a rocket

Glad you had fun Ken its been a few years since I have been to any dunes so it is nice to watch others out playing and enjoying the sand. I am trying to get my bike ready for a weekend trip to Oregon for some sand action I have the itch.

I actually rode with Pammy a few times before the raffle and worked on & rode Chris's RS bike, the Pammy motor did not go in to Chris's bike, it was not even close to the Pammy motor by any means.

but now there is a new motor, not built by Q. and it runs way better. thanks to Carl and Pete and Skully...
plus the bike is not full of fairy tales, Q preached one thing to us, and when
i got his personal bike, i was like i have the best of the best. but guess what.
is was not that. there were so many things thta were not on the bike that he said
was on it. how about a reed boot covered in rtv, to cover the holes/cracks.
the only 2 things it had was the back cut tranny and a rx piston.. i could go
on and on to.

I don't come to this forum for all the drama I come for information, knowledge and advice. I do however get a kick out of stirring the pot a little which was why I even bothered posting Q's video extending the dining trip challenge.
An uphill sand race is a hell of alot more demanding on a motor/bike than a uphill street race fyi. Go take a person or a horse for that matter and have them walk uphill on pavement then have them try it in sand. Huge diff!

I simply acknowledged the fact that I remembered what the challenge was and clued everyone else in on what you were talking about.
Can't even make fun of obviously silly things without starting a war.
Punch me in the face if it makes you feel better, but I'm tired of this ludicrous attitude everyone has OVER SOME STUPID QUAD PARTS...at least it won't seep into every enjoyable thing this site offers.
Guys, when you read stuff on this forum and decide to post things, please keep this in mind:
Our quads are a TOY, a HOBBY, a device of RECREATION, and those things are generally described as things to ENJOY...not a reason to bicker like girls at cheerleader tryouts.
What kind of image do you think that creates in the eyes of others?
No wonder why everyone else thinks our forums suck...
If quad forums were sovereign countries, ours would be somewhere in the Middle East or Africa because we can't STOP FIGHTING OVER STUPID SH!T.

I never said that just pointing out that yoyo's statement isn't accurate. And you asked what challenge so I provided you what challenge. No matter how relavent or irrelevant the challenge nobody wanted to run on pavement. When my bike is done ill run on whatever surface anyone wants to run on because in the real world people race on everything from ice to sand and all surfaces in between. I also don't care if I lose no matter how fast you are there's always someone faster just a matter of time till you find them.
Please..if you want to take what I said a nit pick go ahead. Knippleberg can call out another street race tomorrow and if nobody shows up he is king? Just remember he even said in his video that the most prestigeous race is the hill so what does that tell you....

The only time my quads have gone on pavement are connecting trails or drying them off after a wash.

For example I'm getting a package of work done to my engine at a 1/3 of the cost, is his work really 3 times better than most all other builders? I doubt it but again this is all my opinion and I'll likely never see a HPR bike ever.

I have no clue I didn't get a quote from Q to do any work on my build except for a pipe. I did get a quote from Jerry and it was triple what I'm paying to have the same work done. An extra 5 horsepower I'm guessing is the maximum if anything I gave up with the port work I'm having done. So 3x the cost for a couple extra ponies was a no brainer for me.

I'd like to see a cost of build comparison. I'm not discounting Jerry I have spoken to him and its very obvious he is very good at designing and building a bike. But the cost of having him build a bike vs the cost of RK being able to do the majority of his build himself says a lot to me. That and the fact that Zelda looks effing awesome and was detuned for the race. I have no horse in the race seeing is that neither rk or Jerry have had a hand in my Zilla at all this is just my opinion.
Jerry does the work on the motor components and built the pipe, while Dale builds his own bikes and assembles his own motors.
Big round of applause to Dale aka The Fisherman!! What a story book ending to a saga. He has stepped up to every challenge and product testing for the quadzilla world to push the envelope and get the truth out.

they took the offer to race RK (Q), and they beat him racing up the hill. in the real world...
