Rumor has it that the only reason Suzuki went to the 7 bolt head/small reed setup was to bring the hp down a touch and try to help with the headgasket blowing issue.

Im not saying there are none out there cuz i know dale has a monster im just saying every big reed motor ive ever ran against i crushed. Thing ive always noticed is they seem to be gutless everywhere but on top.

And i have never personally drag raced mine but the guy i purchased it from was into drag racing quads. He had zillas with snowmobile tripples in them and slicks. He told me when he ran my bike it ran 12's in the quarter mile.

my 87 runs like a scalded ape. Ive crushed everything Ive ever raced with it. It does have that hidden power band though somewhere in the mid range that if your not careful it will dump you quick. I was racing a atc 250r when it hit and pulled up in the air while i was passing the atc 250r. I had to let off to keep from flipping and was still looking back at the 250r. Then i raced my uncles newer yz 250 and crushed it. Well the yz was tricky. If i could hook up id crush the yz. But if i couldnt get traction the yz could take me but id catch back up once i hit third.

Old thread but just curious on views of big reed vs small reed.Any reasoning behind why Suzuki switched to the small read on 88+ 250 and 500,s?
The smaller intake port has a smaller hole, on the same size cylinder. A way to add material with out completely redesigning. Didn't the first zillas get a bad rep for cracking cylinders and blowing head gaskets. More material and an extra head stud to address those issues.could be more to the design change.

Rainman - I am building a stock small reed 500 to test the theory of more torque/throttle response that alot of people claim. Ill see if the old but dyno can tell the difference from the stock 87 topend I was running.

Nice,I,m very interested in the results. My 250 is an 87 big reed.500 is an 88 small reed.Have to say I like the idea of the big reed intake but would be nice to hear/see some opinions or theories behind it.

Make sure you do the tests run with the seat off, makes the butt dyno more precise. :))

i dont know the what the difference would be if you just swapped stock cylinders. the small reed cylinder in the pic looks un ported and still has the paint inside where the reeds would mount, the 87 was ported by CT according to the previous owner so i cant make that comparision. motorgeek might have that answer

Think it has been said that the small reed will produce more low end throttle response given the size of the intake tract and the large reed will produce a few more top peak hp. The shape of the intake port n both cylinders are different. I don't know if the transfer tunnels are different sizes between the two or transfer port shapes are the same. The Ed shape seems to be the same.

How much more hp can you get out of the large reed cyl vs the small reed?

I ask because the 87 zillas I got both had small reed cyl installed.

in person its noticeably larger. the small reed looks like the size of a 250r honda

I wonder what the CM squared (area) of each opening is? Then we could see how much bigger a large reed motor is. For the top pic it doesn't look that much bigger.
