Trans lock up need help ASAP
« on: March 02, 2013, 11:23:32 pm »
Hello all I have a 1987 lt 500. I bought it with a blown head gasket rebuilt the top end. While riding 2-3 mins after warm up in second gear it made a screaching sound and locked up the rear tires!
I said to my self oh no lost a top end. well I clutched it kicked it and she fired right back up no problem. Wheew i thought not a seized piston. shift into 1st and let the clutch out go about 1/2 a rev of the rear tires and trans locks up? it will shift into all gears exept neutral. it will roll with the clutch in. It will idle and rev fine?
I have searched the web and have not found any answers.

please help got any ideas?

You really need to pull the clutchcover and have a look before you do anything else

If a transmission is locked up in all gears but one of the gears and the bike will roll in one gear when the clutch is pulled in, one of the free-wheeling gear has usually welded itself to the shaft.   Free-wheeling gears often weld themselves to the shaft when the tranmission oil gets too low.
