On the way to texas!!
« on: May 19, 2013, 12:58:47 pm »
Yessir!  Time For some testing. My sand season is over in Las Vegas. So i'm sending this to west texas king. He PROMISED this would motivate him to get his 250 together faster so im glad to help wherever i can lol...
He is going to put some time on it to make sure there are no issues with this part before i start making them available. It will fit 87 and up 250's and all the zilla's. I will offer a windowed and non windowed type. Like i said, not going to release it until tex gets me some feedback on it just in case it needs any tweaks.

Thanks again. Robb

Got any pics Tex???

Here's the pics you sent me:

Hey, what kind of torque do you think I should use on it?
I'd hate to crush it under excess pressure.

Thanks, i was having trouble resizing the pics. They wont crush. 16 layers thick carbon fiber (overbuilt once again). I think some nice washers under the bolts will work well. I recommend using an ultra grey adhesive will work best that way you dont have to crush a gasket.
Reason i say that is you dont want to over torque the soft threads on the cylinder and also dont want to damage the clear coating on the part.

Gotcha.
I don't have the part in hand so I can't tell how thick it is, thought I'd ask either way.
Figured a washer should do the trick in spreading the load out and preventing any surface damage.

You want to talk about overbuilt carbon fiber, I've got a plane with 1/2" thick carbon fiber skin...no telling how many layers that is!

13.robb    Have you ever looked into a CF zilla hood.  What would that cost in CF.  It would be so cool.

How did you get the clear window?

Is it clear coat or polycarbonate?

+2 on the Zilla hoods

Thanks guys. im working with some new processes. The window is a super strong epoxy, it is all coated and incapsulated in a barrier coat. i gotcha on the hoods, this new process will make it easier to attempt a mold, just need to find time to build a mold. Tex, it is going in the mail tomorrow. How are ya coming along?

A++++++++++ work as always Robb. Have you done any of the carbon chrome parts? I think the last few layers have some sort of stainless mesh to make them look like cf chrome.

PV cover arrived today!
Looks great, even better than the pictures.
I'll get some shots of it on the engine here in the next day or so.
First impression...lightweight, tough, window is clear, finish is glossy smooth, mating surface looks to be true.
Hard to believe there's 16 layers in there!

Haven't got the cylinder back from the shop, everything else is ready to go!
I'll take a picture of the cover on another cylinder to show how slick it looks.
Now I need to buy some CF bolts with the new cover:

Robb's work is top notch....I've had him build a couple different carbon fiber pieces for my supermoto and I couldn't be happier with his work or customer service. Great guy to deal with.

Cometic makes a PV window gasket out of the CFM base gasket material, maybe that would be the perfect deal under this CF PV window.

It'd cushion & seal it in one.

Hey there Tex, I dunno if you are getting my pm's or not, last i heard you had a couple-3 hrs on the new part, was wondering if you had a chance to get out lately on it? Also a couple pix of it installed would be awesome! im ready to make a few of these up, but i want to be sure there is no issues. Thanks again for your input so far. Robb

Robb, I've got close to 10hrs on it, and she still looks brand new.
No cracks/crazing/yellowing of the epoxy and no delamination, no signs of adverse reactions due to cylinder heat.
Right now it's on my hybrid, I decided to do both the 250 and the hybrid at the same time (otherwise the hybrid would just keep sitting there while I rode the 250 LOL).
It fits on both engines just fine, I'll get a few pics posted up for you.

That is great news tex! (also glad your bikes runnin' again) Looks like i will make a few of these up in the next few weeks. I will offer a windowed and non-windowed version. Thanks so much for doin' some R+D for me. I would but 110+ degrees on the sand melts pistons i've heard?
