This 87 is starting to scare me.

I had the rear tore down in 30 minutes. It would have been faster if I didn't have to deal with that stupid DG rear bumper. I don't think it's going back on. I was preparing for battle!! My the 87 took 3 days just to get a hub off.

Did the 87 Zilla come with a OEM o-ring chain? I believe the entire rear drivetrain was stock. Maybe original axle bearings? There were teeth marks in the axle nuts but maybe they just snugged them up? I don't know but the chain and brake side axle bearing were smoked!!

Need some parts now. Not alot as everything seems straight.

I know for a fact the 250 had an endless chain. I can't imagine the Zilla would have had a master link from the factory.

The drivetrain rebuild went well.

My local motorsports shop (moto-man racing, also a great mail order place) has some rear axle bearings in stock along with a new o-ring chain. I picked up a liter of tranny oil too. The PO had given me a new set of rear brake pads and a new 13 tooth front sprocket. He had a 12 tooth front sprocket that was really worn and actually chewing up the lock washer for sprocket nut.

So far:
New Chain
New Axle Bearings and Seals
New Front Sprocket
New Rear Brake Pads
Re-used rear 42 Tooth Sprocket from the Shirley Build (almost new)
New UNI Foam Air Filter left over from the Shirley Build

Also installed the factory clutch lever/parking brake set-up salvaged from the Shirley build, and replaced the nasty sticking twist throttle with the thumb throttle from the PO. I pulled the FMF Silencer w/ SA apart as it looked like it was leaking oil. The packing was gone. So I repacked it with some insulation and sealed it back up. That silencer looks to be extremely restrictive!! That's ok for this quad as its not a drag racer. I put the turf tamers on that the PO gave me vs. the monster truck mudders that came on it (for sale lol).

Total cost so far $131.00

Went through the carb. Its the 87 TM38SS Mikuni with stock jetting (420 Main). It leaked gas so I cleaned the needle valve up and put it back together.

I need new grips and some bolts from Buckeye to get things buttoned up. I hope to get it out this weekend to do some playing around. Nothing real hard as I don't wanna blow it up and wreck the head/cylinder/crank from those shady factory thrust washers.

CRUSTY!!!

I had the old/new 87 out today for my first time. She runs real good!! I was very pleasantly surprised with the power. Airbox lid and all! It comes on pretty early and pulls strong. Signs off way earlier than the Dr Q. V2 Pipe on Shirley. However its still a very fast quad with just a crappy pipe!! I think this Zilla will make a great little trail partner when I feel like burning oil.

It's alot easier to wheelie vs my other Zilla. Power is smoother and not as violent.

It looks like Shirly and the rescue 87 could use a camber spacer kit from Mitch.
