Media blasting engine components

Is it ok to media blast engine components before any port and head work is done? Also to media blast my engine cases should I assemble it fully with all covers and head on and blast it that way? I'm open air blasting so not in a cabinet so the assembled motor fitting in a cabinet isn't a worry. I've never sand blasted anything so I clueless about this stuff! First timer over here! Lol [|]

if you don't tape everything off. sand will get in. its best to disassemble the motor and remove bearings to do it right. I used medium grit glass bead and looked really good

I actually just saw something on media blasting wit dry ice. Benifit is it leaves nothing but water. Check for someone local

Actually dry ice is just that. Dry.   It is frozen carbo dioxide and when it unfreezes it turn bact to its state of a gas.  If you can find someone that does this it would be the best way to not co taminate the engine.  If you use sand it will find it's way into every nook cranny and bearing and cause you all ki ds of problems later down the road.

Dry ice blasting would cause localized intense cooling (-109F) of the aluminum engine parts.  I would worry about warping and potential cracking due to shrinkage.

Has anyone ever used dry ice blasting on engine components?

HOT Glue Plugz into all your Ports This is what we use to do at the shop i use to work at (Not too hard to remove after)  , also if you check out my Youtube Channel you can see what Copper Slag looks like done to a zilla motor.

Never SAND blast aluminum... it will eat the aluminum. Only use glass or plastic bead, walnut shells or soda. The dry ice is and option if you know a shop that can do it properly. Also having it dipped in a sonic cleaner would work and is very thorough.
If brains were gasoline, you couldn't power a **** ant's go-cart 2 laps around a cheerio.

Had the frame sand blasted for $50 a local company does industrial blasting and the guy had the entire frame stripped in 20 minutes as he was stripping a crane. I soda blasted the stator/flywheel cover and head. Plan on soda blasting the rest of the cases and covers gonna seal them and plug holes with high temp silicone it peals right off aluminum.

Dry ice will not remove paint from a metal surface.

Dry ice blasting on engine components:


Guy seems to be pretty chill about using it on engine blocks, so....I'd say it's fine to use on an engine provided you block off holes to prevent the crud from blowing INTO the engine.

I'm all for knocking out tyranny, but I don't think that has anything to do with cleaning LT engines.
