« on: May 21, 2013, 08:08:31 pm »
my buddy just picked up an 06 DS650, I was just wondering if there are any issues with these bikes and what to look for, as i found one that is in pretty nice shape i may pick up just because, maybe good for woods riding.

Not on one that new. They are pretty solid, pretty fast, but VERY heavy. Overall very good rig.

I love mine, its a sand tank, there are few easy mods for the DS, Carb mods, and either a End cap or good exhaust and they run great, they do need help with the A arms- for handling ASR sells special Upper A arms and FireBall racing sells great a arms for the DS which really helps in the handling overall on the DS.
Engine is pretty much bullet proof with normal maintenance, the hot set up is Ron Wood A1  cams, ported intake and the HSR45 Carb, End Cap or RW exhaust system, electric start is nice too!
You have 3 great builders for the DS 650 , Ron Woods Racing http://rotax.net/   The Bom (Jeff Ross) http://www.thebomracing.com/  OMW Racing (Mr. Horsepower) http://www.omwracing.com/

I'm looking at one that has aftermarket a-arms and Elka stage 4's all around it looks like a really nice bike in the pictures, but the guy took it out this past weekend and said now its hard to turn it over. He's not sure if its just a crank bearing or if its a rod bearing, it ran fine up till then he drove it all weekend. Anyway it's still a pretty good deal cause he said he will sell it as is if I want, only thing is I'm not sure if I want to get I to it. That's why I was wondering how these things are for cranks and rods and pistons? Anyone have any ideas what it might be. It does still turn over just not fast. I am going to see it in person on Saturday.

From the ones I have serviced, several have wiped out big end bearings.

if you want that bike to make some good power call eric odham (Mr. Horsepower) at OMW in Buzzard Creek Kentucky. He had developed stroker cranks produced by falicon and big bore cylinder produced by CP Ind. Think his biggest DS is over 900cc. When I was there he had a turbo set up for it sitting on the floor in a box.  +k2

What was i thinking if i gotta tear into it might as well do sosomething with it i guess. Think it's worth 1200 as is? It comes with stage 4 elkas all around.

If the shocks are good, they alone are worth $1200...

Sure his battery is oK? These quads need a GOOD ground also, so check the ground, see if the bolt is loose, happens some time the ground bolt loosens just a bit, also check the starter, could be bushings, last but not least when were the valves  adjusted?

Ok talked to the guy and found out what happened, he was driving it and it was running great, then it just died on him, he started it back up and it ran for about 60ft and then died again. Now it won't start. Any ideas?

Somthing like that happened to my grizzly. It ended up being the woodruf key on the crankshaft sheared off.
