Bad news today
« on: February 12, 2013, 06:23:54 am »
So I was working out a deal with a guy for a 1987 lt500r and had been talking to him for the better part of a week via email and was arranging a way for him to deliver it to me and this morning tells me he has took the add down and is fixing the quad up to sell for more money now because he was told they are bringing $4000 because desert racers are looking for them.  Am I just out of the loop, but I have yet seen any stock lt500r that has been ridden and used go nowhere near 4k since probably 2004-2005.  The only Zillas I have seen bring the big bucks have the best mods not just some cheap pipe and original motor that has only had new pistons put in never a bottom end which we know it will need.  I even searched California craigslist and found quite a few lt500r's going for $2-2500 and that is a high cost of living state.

Anyway thanks for letting me vent.  The guy was really nice, but I have never backed out on a deal or had someone back out on me so I am very disappointed in the situation.  My grandfather taught me a lesson when I was 5 or 6 years old that if you say your going to do something you do it.  I have always given good deals to everyone and never been money hungry so I guess thats why I find good deals but in this instance I had my hopes up.

The unfortunate thing with 500's is the average persone with a 500 (in any shape) think they have a gold mine. I used to think they were pretty rare until I joined up to the old site.

Yeah I sold my first one in 1997 for $2500 it was a lot newer then and just like all 2 strokes now unless your talking vintage road race bikes prices have dropped severely.  You see Honda 250r's going for 1500-2000 now and they are way more sought after sadly enough.

40,000 units total I believe approximately 10k a year if I remember right this was brought up a long time ago but I think 40,000 is about right. I think that is worldwide.  To compare I think the honda 250r sold like 50k in the U.S. alone

Desert racers? This quad doesn't qualify for any contingency money/prizes even if they were to win the overall...

Sorry to hear of the deal falling apart. Keep looking I found a 500/250 deal for cheap

Thanks I will keep looking and one will come around I just thought I would vent I have just never had a situation like this and threw me off for a little while.   There is a dealer with a lt500r for $3000 here that was $4000 about a year ago so apparently these things aren't flying off the shelves even at a dealer.

Hey Merc,
Are you in Calif? (I ask because you said you were looking in Calif Craig list)  If so, where about?
Not sure if you are looking for a good deal on a fixer upper or a good deal on a completed NICE Zilla. (Usually a much better deal getting paying a bit more to get a completed one.  It aint cheap doing all the work restoring one....)
TLAP is in Santa Maria with Black Bettie, which was a Quad-of-the-month at the other site.  It is for sale.

I Have been looking at about a 600 mile radius from Snohomish, Washington about 40 minutes north of seattle.  I am hoping to find a farely stock bike with a straight frame and go from there.  I dont want to buy a fully custom quad that has everything done to it.  I think there are a lot of nice bikes that have thousands of dollars in them and then they require a premium to purchase and take the fun out of building it, but I just want something I can work on and transform with my boys and maybe daughters when they are older if they want to learn.  This is going to be a longer term project I am devoting this year mods to putting a big bore kit in my yz250.

That's all good.  Just throwing it out there.  I did the same thing.  And the $'s added quickly.  Will never get out of it what was put in.  Not sure if I would do it again.  But sure don't regret it.
Sounds like it will be a great project with the kids.
Good luck and have fun with the project when you find one.  They are out there, but you are right, too many think they are worth gold because someone told them so.

Yeah some people are trying to get money for machines that need completely rebuilt and have busted up plastics and bent frames and stems.  I went and looked at one a month or so ago and the guy said on the phone it was mint.  There was nothing mint on the quad except the new tires.  Plastics were **** where the owner tightened them too tight The rear shock was toast along with the all the chassis bearings which is fine but not when your asking $3000 for the thing.  I addressed the issues with the seller and he still thought he had gold.  The bike has dropped down to $2600 last time I looked and I am sure it will sell for less then that.

You are right I will spend more money on  a bike and pipe and carburetor  then some guys are asking for decked out quads but I want to break things and then throw my tools telling myself I should have just bought one done already.

The fun of working on your bike rebuilding it just like you want is well....part of the fun.  But it is the more expensive route.  Finding a bike that is a high dollar build and totally restored would be far far far less expensive to buy when they come up for sale than building it and buying all those components yourself.  It comes down to what is it worth to you to have the enjoyment of building it up yourself...and how long can you wait to find the cherry quad you want..

Sorry to hear your deal didn,t work out.As far as the high prices I can relate being up in Ontario Canada. The norm for a stock clean Zilla up hear is $3000-3500.Thats stock with possibly a new top end and FMF exhaust. The odd time a good deal comes up but few and far between. There is even a LT250 for sale for $4500 right now although it does have alot of upgrades suspension wise.Sometimes you just have to be at the place at the right time.Beings your in no hurry stay patient and I,m sure the right one with turn up.:)
