1987 LT230EH QUAD RUNNER EXHAUST OPTIONS?
« on: January 03, 2016, 07:11:36 pm »
I came across these 2 LT230EH's left in the woods behind my friends place. I bought both for less than $200.  I'm using one for parts and trying to get the other one put together.  I have 2 factory exhausts that are in lousy shape.  I've searched quite a bit for any aftermarket exhausts proffered for the 87' model.  Apparently DG started making pipes for the LT230E in 88'.  I'm out of ideas and was hoping one of you guys would know if there is an aftermarket option.  Is there someone I could go to for a custom header pipe and possibly a muffler?  I'm wanting to completely go through the motor and transmission.  I was wanting to do a big bore on it, and I'd like to get it back to like new, just with a bunch of added HP & torque... and if anybody can tell me what kind of things I can do to the motor, that would be great.  Do they make cams, bigger valve job?, custom +4swinger, wider a-arm?,....I'd like to bore it to a 300, updated and larger carb if needed..?  What options are there for an 87'?

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a LT230.  Those things are turds.

It's still a part of our quad history.  I managed to find 2 of the first year LT230E's.... then swapped parts to the other one.  They may be turds from the factory but I'm wanting something more powerful and a wider stance so it's not leaning as much with Steelers shocks for about $1400.  Add a custom swinger, probably for $500 maybe more, New ITP rims with razor rubber.  The motor definitely needs rebuilt too.  Anybody got recommendatios for the motor work?  While I'm in there, it makes sense to go through all of it.  My 85' LT250R can get rebuilt once i harvest some walnut trees this winter.  I got both covered I think.  Just 2 of my walnuts will bring more than $1200!  And I'm loaded with them. ;D

Of what history?

The lt230 isn't part of the lr250r or lt500r history.

It might be apart of general quad history but that doesnt mean ****. That is like saying, well the gremlin is part of history, I should spend lots of money trying to make it faster when it really wont.

If you want to spend money on an inferior quad, go right ahead. But good luck finding any performance parts for one.

I'm not sure what got in zillafreaks butt but just know one thing, the rear factory hubs on my 85' 250R slid right onto my 87' 230E.  If I looked closer I'd probably find more stuff that the quadracer influenced.  As a matter of a fact the a arm bushings on the 230E look very close to the 250R's.  So I guess you could say they were in a way intertwined.  It may be an inferior quad but I think he's wanting to change that.  Am I the only one reading what redwhiteblue posted?  And besides, if he has the money, I'm sure he will find someone who can help him.  If you don't have anything nice to say, find somewhere else to vent.

Are Cobra exhausts still around?  I know they made cheaper exhaust pipes for basically every four stroke ATV.

I don't know but now I'm researching them to find out.  Where can I get a set of new fenders for the 87'?

It may be a dg exhaust but it's better than a stock one.  I'm not trying to go through it again, I'm just saying.

I did a mechanical restoration a few months back on a Honda ATC-185S. I found a brand new DG exhaust for it on Amazon for $145. You might check there for parts for your bike.

I have searched and searched for a new or n.o.s. crankshaft for all 1980 + 1981 49cc. scooter models.  I can't find anything.  Can I have one made?  Would I have to have it case hardened?                                         Or am I just scr£wed?  :'(

I did a little digging around and found that the 87' 230E uses a pipe that isn't compatible with any other years.  And nobody makes an exhaust for the 87.  Would it be possible to have someone make me an exhaust that is a little bigger?  I want the increase in size to compensate for the extra air I'm going to have once I get the hot cam stage 1 cam.  I was wondering if somebody out there knows how to enlarge my intake and exhaust valves.  I probably will have the motor torn down all the way and replace all wear and tear items.  Maybe coat the cylinder walls with nicasil.  What else can be done to make the 230 to make it a power horse?  Newer larger carb?

I'm sure that any good performance machine shop could do the work for you. I had Powroll in Oregon do my Honda ATC-185. Another awesome shop is Racers Edge in Tucson, AZ. They could probably set you up with a custom exhaust as well.

In any 4 stroke engine, power is unlocked in the cylinder heads. Porting, polishing, valve size, and chamber size & shape are things that could be massaged to extract more power.

How would I go about getting larger valves?  Or should I leave that to whoever does the engine work?

Power is in PSI, more boost, more power.

But on your head, you forgot cams. Power is also had by changing when the valves open and how far and long they are open.

I want to by a stage one cam.  So the valves open & stay open longer and I wanted bigger valves if possible.  Do you port and polish a 4-stroke?

Yes you can port and polish a 4 stroke...Race cars/Autos are 4 stroke and the same principles apply. The key is knowing where to do the porting and polishing which is something the guys that specialize in that stuff come in.
Can,t fix stupid.:)
