« on: January 12, 2014, 01:35:36 pm »
Looking at a lt 80, actually kfx 80, tomorrow.  2005. Looks clean. Fmf pipe   What to look for, questions to ask, maintenance to be done etc?   He is asking 1300. I'm thinking more like 8-900. Thoughts?

For my son that turns 6 in couple weeks...

The weak link on them is the engine cases as they are the rear shock pivot point. Look for bends cracks or welds on the cases.

Ya, the engine acts as part of the swing arm. Cracks/breaks usually occur just behind the engine. Also remove the chain cover and inspect. There is no system to tighten the chain and sprokets get chewed up quickly.

bent foot pegs, they rust out under there to, start pulling on tires and wheels to see if a arms need bearings and wheels need bearings.
that will always help you get a better price when you start show him **** is bad and needs replaced.

Look in front of the front sprocket for cracks.
See if the stock pipe comes with it. (I'd be putting it back on).
FYI: when I get one in, I rebuild the motor and go over everything. Depending on whether it has any goodies, I get 1000-1200.
Even if you pay 1300, it's cheap for a dependable machine that will last him for years.

he wouldnt budge on his price and I just cant see paying that much when I have seen some go for literally half that price.  or I could get a DRR or Apex for about that much.   Damn thing was peppy too!  probably too much for a new rider, looking for a 50 now...

"I could get a DRR or Apex for about that much."
If you can, you can make good money on them!

At 6 and a new rider, I consider you a very smart man. :)
