Quick dumb head gasket question
« on: February 21, 2014, 12:32:04 pm »
So I pulled the head off my 87 zilla with the intention of sending it out to get oringed. Life threw some things at me so I wont have the money for a while. Im putting another cometic head gasket back on it.
What is the right way to install it?  With the small holes toward the exhaust port side so the coolant flow is correct?   thanks

If you go copper you need some sort of sealant. After going copper I talked to Jerry and he recommends the OEM head gasket which doesn't require sealant.

whichever side is the most restrictive.  The goal is to slow the water flow to the exhaust side.

The section with no holes in it goes under the coolant neck of the head.

The nub on the outer surface goes to the rear.

This an '88 - up gasket.

I just looked at a bunch of my gaskets and some have no holes in the center of the small holes and some have just small holes. Not sure which are OEM and which are aftermarket. Either way the center most small holes go under the water neck of the head.

Thanks for the replies.. But now im a little confused... And i did this
Same job about a year and a half ago!!  Damn CRS syndrome.  The
Gasket i got has half with small holes and half with large oval holes.
If i install it with the small holes toward the front right of the cylinder, wont
That slow the coolant flow to force it around the exhaust port then across
The head to the water neck? I think thats what gillio said.

The small holes choke the water so it travels all around the top end instead of rushing down and not making it around the cylinder. It makes the water go around the head evenly.

You want it to come out of the water neck and be distributed around the cylinder some what evenly. If it was the big holes under the water neck coolant would just take the path of least resitance and go straight down to the lower passage right under the water neck and pull no heat from the back side of the cyl

Edit- Lt500kid beat me to it and said so much simpler. Lol

Ok thanks thats what i thought.  I noticed that my gasket kit now
Has an AFm gasket for the pv window and the head gasket has afm
Stamped all over it but it looks like a regular fiber gasket with
The metal ring.  Just noticed it is different than the cometic kit i bought
About 18 months ago. Thanks for the help

The coolant enters the cylinder from the cases through  a hole on the right side of the exhaust port.  The head returns the coolant to the radiator.  The outlet in the head is almost directly above where the coolant enters the cylinder.

The small holes in the front of the head gasket force the majority of the coolant to flow around the left and right side of the cylinder to the rear of the cylinder.  Once the coolant streams have traveled around both sides of the cylinder, it travels up through the large holes in the head gasket ino the rear of the head.  The coolant now flows over the combustion chamber to the water outlet in the head and then back to the top of the radiator.

that's right.  You want the small holes on the exhaust side to slow the water flow.
