Radiator ?
« on: April 15, 2014, 12:45:02 pm »
I was thinking about having a 3 core radiator made for the zilla. Do you guys think it's a waste of time and money or do you think it would be a benefit to the zilla ? Just wanted to know what you guys thought.

If your radiator is not plugged up on the inside and ....the little fins are not peened over on the outside from the blast of small pebbles and.... you do not ride around in 1st gear, the stock radiator should be ok.  A 3 row radiator DOES NOT give you 1/3 (33%)  more cooling over a 2 row radiator like advertised by many of radiator manufactures.  You will be lucky if a 3 row will even give you 15% more cooling.

Make sure your air scoop is present at the bottom of the radiator.  The air scoop is essential regardless what radiator you have.

Does anyone have a picture of the scoop? I found it on the parts diagram but it would appear that mine is missing.

I got an good deal on a radiator from CBR performance. When I talked to them on the phone they said they were sister companies with PWR and made the exact same radiator. I got it for $383 through a middle man on ebay user name atvgalaxy It came pretty quick and is an awesome unit. Here is one they are selling now marked up a little. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CBR-Performance-Radiator-Suzuki-LT500-LT-500-86-87-88-89-/140747583686?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20c535b0c6&vxp=mtr  It really helped me with cooling issues as my stocker was bent and the fins were in horrible shape. It fits pretty snug as they made use of every centimeter they had available lol.

The only time my 500 ever got "hot" was putting around in first gear at camp rzr.  We were trying to find a place to park, we farted around for 15minutes it got up to 220.  No damage was done.  Just bothered me, since it usually runs about 170 when blasting the dunes.

I agre with Bill, the OEM radiator is damn good, but like any radiator after 25 years they need to be serviced, when I was building the ERBE 2 I had the radiator serviced , flushed and had a new radiator cap neck installed all for 80 bucks, lot cheaper than 380 bucks, save your money get a temp gauge and if your still running hot, you might want to check out your water pump, lets be honest, im a Heavy Load on my quads and I never had a temp problem on a LT500.
FYI I do run them raw no paint

$400 for an ATV radiator?  F that.  I'm sure most of them are made in China and they just mark them up like 600%.

The one that was on mine was really bent and in terrible shape. I sometimes find myself in tight technical trails where we move at a slow pace. My new rad definitely made a difference and held off overheating a little longer (not that I ever let it get to the point of overheating lol). I had to buy a new one anyway and didn't want to get someone else's off eBay and have to fix it more. Call me crazy but I'm pretty happy with that purchase.
